blog ใหม่จะให้ comment ได้ด้วย แล้วก็ manage ผ่านพวก blogging software ที่มัน "เบา" กว่า rapid weaver ได้ง่าย (เพราะว่า rapidweaver มันไม่ใช่โปรแกรมทำ blog โดยเฉพาะ)

Books

I'm a bookworm. Everyone who knows me well enough knows this.

Moreover, when I find something of a real interest, I would go on and buy (almost) every book written for the subject. Most of my good friends know this. Janos or Peter once asked me why do I have so many C++ books. Read the earlier post, its STL was one of the thing that blew me away.

The same went for Haskell (even though I couldn't find that many books comparing to C++), Chaos Theory, Fractals, Complex System Theory, Cellular Automata (all of these triggered flood of Physics, Applied Maths, and other science books I bought).

Now the same is going for Ruby (and Rails). Recently I found myself started shopping again, even though my salary as a university professor isn't that high (comparing to when I was a scholarship student; this is the way things are in this country). I will surely review those Ruby & Rails books later.

Among them, I found Best of Ruby Quiz to be practically very good. It's one of the best way ones could learn a new programming language and how to program in that language; by learning to tackle programming problems and learn a full solution from many other people. This way, not only you understand a new language, you also

Practically using it to write real programs that actually do something useful. The #1 problem I found with people learning a new language is that, they learn syntax and write toy examples following books. That's it. This cause them to switch back to the old language whenever they have to solve problems. It happens to many of my students trying to learn Python, only to switch to C when solving problems. Only a few actively using Python nowadays because they chose to do one of their assignment in Python.
Effective communication using idioms and expressions. Programming a new language is like learning to speak in another language. Not only you have to learn the syntax, the grammar. You will also need to know a lot of idioms and more importantly, expressions. Some languages are obviously expressionistic than another. I lived in Japan for 7 years and find the Japanese language more expressionistic than the language of my mother tongue and English. So, it's important to learn how to use those expressions and idioms well, rather than just understand its grammar structures and how a sentence is composed. Otherwise an effective communication won't be achieved.
Change the way of thinking. This is, also, like the learning a new natural language. It reflects the way you think about communication and solving problems. Thinking in metaprogramming, functional, terms is really different from thinking imperative. It's really Fortran vs. Lisp. It's really Java vs. Haskell. It's really English vs. Japanese. It's really about how you're thinking now vs. how you have to think if you're to use a new language efficiently effective.

I'm still looking for a hardcopy of Programming Ruby, Agile Web Development with Rails, Rails Recipes, and Ruby Cookbook. If anyone kind enough to see them somewhere in Bangkok, please kindly let me know. And, no, buying online from any source isn't an option for me currently.

Ruby & Rails

Recently I'm really into this, and while I do not really blog about programming language and framework, both names in the title deserved a place.

I started learning new software development technology again last year after I came back from Japan. The last three times I really learned something and got really excited about were

When I read about C++ STL during my undergrad years (if my memory doesn't lie to me, it's during my 2nd year)
When I saw Haskell quicksort code and a lot of its recursive beauty which kicked me into the Functional and Declarative programming realm, where I fell in love with their expressionism, dynamism, and metaprogramming.
Cocoa framework and Objective-C, right after I switched to the Mac platform during late 2003, where I really came to understand the power of well-designed frameworks and power of Object-Oriented and dynamic typing, and also the ease of application building with Interface Builder and other tools. Objective-C is really what I should have learned as opposed to C++ when I tried Object-Oriented the first time.

Honestly I did not feel the same when I studied Python. I found almost no convincing reason for me to get excited about it and really used it in any real works. While I think it's a pretty good language with good design and performance, and I certainly recommended Python over C/C++/Java for my students and people ... I'd never found the exciting moment with it like I did with Haskell.

Rails changed that. I had long been neglect of the Ruby language during my student days, and never pay enough attention to it to understand all its coolness. I didn't even attend Matz's talk at my university (Matz graduated from University of Tsukuba).

Rails came into my attention during 2005, with a lot of news making Slashdot headlines. I didn't really about Web Development Framework at that time and the only framework I'd really played with was Cocoa (I do not really regard J2SE as a framework). All my web development experiences were done in either JSP or Perl. I looked a bit into PHP but found it to be a new Perl, which could translate directly into Nightmare of maintainability, so I didn't give it a real try.

Ruby on Rails blew me away.

Next semester I will be teaching 2 subjects, namely Object-Oriented Programming and Programming for the World Wide Web. SmallTalk and Ruby will be prime choices for the former (students will have to play a bit with Alice before hand though), but Ruby on Rails might be the only prime choice for the latter. J2EE is not an option I should consider. It's too complex but it should serve well as an example for students. I believe once students understand MVC and Frameworks and structured web development the Rails framework gives, they could take on PHP and a full J2EE stack later, in a more elegant manner.

32-bit vs 64-bit

อ่านบทความที่ Geek Patrol เรื่อง 32-bit vs 64-bit Performance Under Mac OS X (ต่อมาจาก MacSlash อีกที) เห็นว่าน่าสนใจดี ก็เลยเอามาเล่าสู่กันฟัง และอยากจะแสดงความเห็นเพิ่มเติมด้วย

Geek Patrol has published an article comparing 32-bit and 64-bit performance under Mac OS X using both PowerPC-based and Intel-based Macs. What's surprising is that while the Intel-based Macs are faster in 64-bit mode, the PowerPC-based Macs are slower.

จริงๆ แล้วก็ไม่ได้ surprise อะไรมากมายถ้าเข้าใจเรื่องสถาปัตยกรรม และรายละเอียดของการออกแบบ CPU แบบ x86 และแบบ PPC

On PPC 64 bits means that often more data (longer pointers) must be moved around. On Intel 64 bits means that AND that several new registers are available. The speedup from the extra registers overwhealms the slowdown from moving longer pointers.

As someone who used to work at AMD which designed the x86-64 architecture: - 16 integer pipe registers versus 8 in 32 bit mode (of which 6 get used) - Carefully designed CISC so that 64-bit mode takes only 10% more space than 32 bit mode. This is important because the main bottleneck in modern systems is memory speed (hence the constant increase in cache sizes) PowerPC: - no increase in registers - much larger code size increase, although I can't find exact figures. While no one probably cares, it is instructive that the original Intel 64 bit proposal was one 64 bit register, and no additional registers.

The one word I haven't heard in these responses is caching. Accessing more memory is great, but when you move 64 bit pointer into the cache you have half as much of that fast memory. The other answers here are valid, especially with regards to intelligent programming needed to take advantage of 64 bit. Many programs currently out there have type errors which will be revealed on a 64 bit machine. All processors crash at the same relative speed.

I think a better question might be why do so many people expect a 64-bit chip to magically make their 32-bit software run faster. (Yeah, I know, most people aren't computer geeks and think a bigger number means faster. It's a rhetorical question.)I don't think that misconception will disappear any time soon. I was saying the same thing when people were crying that their 16Mhz 386 was slower than my 25Mhz 286 when running 16-bit DOS apps.

โดยสรุปๆ จากสิ่งที่คน post ไว้ก็มีเรื่องขนาดของ data ที่แตกต่างกัน ในระบบ 64-bit นี่ ยังไงๆ ข้อมูลที่จะต้องย้ายไปย้ายมาในหน่วยความจำก็ต้องใหญ่ขึ้นแน่ๆ ดังนั้นก็เลยเสียเวลานานขึ้นในการย้ายมัน (ลองคิดถึงย้ายเตียงเทียบกับย้ายเก้าอี้) ดังนั้นถ้าไม่ทำอะไรที่มันฉลาดๆ เลยนี่ จะโดน performance hit แน่นอน

ทีนี้ ใน 64-bit PPC นี่ มันหมายถึงแค่นั้น(มั้ง) แต่ว่าพอเป็น Intel 64-bit (ย้ำนะ เฉพาะ Intel นะ ไม่ได้มีการพูดถึง architecture อื่น) นี่มันจะมี register เยอะมากขึ้นด้วย ดังนั้นถึงจะเจอ performance hit จากปัญหาขนาดข้อมูล แต่ว่าจะมี performance gain จากจำนวน register ที่มีให้ใช้มากขึ้น ซึ่ง ณ จุดหนึ่ง ถ้า gain มันมากกว่า hit เมื่อไหร่ ก็จะเร็วขึ้น (ลองคิดถึงการเพิ่มคนมาช่วยย้ายเตียง .. เช่นย้ายกัน 10 คน เทียบกับย้ายเก้าอี้คนเดียว)

นอกจากนี้ถ้า optimize อะไรมันหน่อย เช่นที่คนที่บอกว่าเคยทำงานที่ AMD บอกไว้ว่ามีการ optimize CISC code ให้ 64-bit mode ใช้ memory space มากกว่า 32-bit mode 10% และได้ point out เรื่องที่สำคัญเรื่องหนึ่งก็คือ คอขวดมันอยู่ที่ความเร็วของหน่วยความจำ

จริงๆ ผมไม่ใช่ expert ด้านนี้หรอก และคงจะไม่ comment เพิ่มเติมจากสิ่งที่เคยพูดไปบ่อยๆ แล้วทั้งในรายการวิทยุทั้งใน podcast ทั้งใน lecture ว่า 64-bit ไม่ได้แปลว่าเร็วขึ้น แต่อย่างใด

แต่ว่าที่คนสุดท้ายพูดขึ้นมาเนี่ย คิดว่าเป็นอะไรที่คงจะโดนกันหลายคน ขอ quote อีกครั้งละกัน

Farewell, Harddrive

I am here to bid farewell to the hard drive of my old Dell Inspiron 8100. I tried to resurrect it to live with its new task: being a machine some of my students in the lab can use occasionally to practice programming and for me to play with some new OS.

I had fun putting Nexenta alpha 5 on it but it didn't work out so well. I put latest Ubuntu Edgy Eft on it, and it seems to work fine. The only problem I had was internet connection. The wireless card I have doesn't work out of the box and I couldn't connect LAN either. That machine came with an old 3Com ethernet card that needs an connecting adapter (I incorrectly configured it that way, instead of having an internal one, which would not give me any trouble this time). Guess what, I loosed that adapter times ago.

One of my student came an installed Fedora Core 5 on it. Went well until we need to install Emacs. The new package management system (called Pirut or something like that) tried to connect to the internet even though it should search the installation CDs (5 of them, full of mostly used packages) for the software. I had to search the internet for the solution and re-wrote a lot of configuration files (used to do that a lot of the old days of using Linux, still quite handy todays when things aren't the way it should be and finding GUI configuration frontend might be a pain).

All in all, all were fun. I don't remember finding fun like this during my recent days of feeling down with students and works.

Suddenly, during the lab seminar last time (actually we do not have seminar anymore, we just hold a small programming test weekly. 4-5 Best students in my lab make programming problems and then judge other student's solution), the hard drive went dead.

I tried my best to resurrect the drive. But it seems that it's gone for good.

Farewell, my friend. You have worked hard. I remember working on my undergraduate thesis with you on the Inspiron 8100. Good old days.

Now I set myself 3 things to do when I goto computer store again next time:

Find a replacement hard drive. The machine still usable and would serve finely for student learning programming and Linux.
Find another LAN card with another connector, preferably built-in to the card so I won't loose it again.
Battery. This is the hardest and possibly the most expensive and unworthy. The machine could just serve as a desktop (it's a big monster, one of the biggest in its prime days). The battery might be too expensive for its worth. But if all are reasonable, then why not.

I also have to fix the screen of my Inspiron 4150. That machine is still working very fine but the screen had broken. If all things on the list work out, then I would have 2 more machines in the lab for student learning things and working on projects with a cost of less than 1 new machine. I know both machines are still more than capable for those tasks.

An Inconvenient Truth

เพิ่งไปดูมา หนังดีเหมือนกัน Al Gore เล่นได้ดี มี presentation ที่ convincing .. อีกหน่อยจะเอามาเป็นตัวอย่างเวลาสอนคนทำ presentation ถึงแม้ว่า presentation ของ Gore จะไม่ใช่ academic ซะทีเดียว (ค่อนข้างหนักไปทาง political message มากกว่า)

มีเรื่องเดียวที่ไม่ชอบ ไม่รู้คิดมากไปหรือเปล่า แต่ว่าที่ Gore เอาเรื่องหายนะที่เกิดขึ้นที่ Florida มาพูดขึ้น พร้อมๆ กับพูดเรื่อง consequence (ตรงนี้ยังรับได้) แต่ว่าอยู่ดีๆ ก็เอาเรื่องที่ตัวเองแพ้เลือกตั้งที่ Florida ทำให้ชวดการเป็นประธานาธิบดีอเมริกาขึ้นมาพูดเฉยเลย ไม่พอ ประเด็นยังเป็นเรื่องการให้ความสำคัญกับคำว่า Political issues ของนักการเมือง (แน่นอนล่ะ ในเรื่องนี้ Gore projects ตัวเองว่าเป็นนักการเมืองที่ให้ความสำคัญกับประเด็นนี้มาตลอด)

นอกนั้นถือว่าดี Message ชัดเจน clear มาก ตัวอย่างและข้อมูลที่นำมาอ้างอิงถือว่า convincing ลักษณะการพูด การเน้นการย้ำ การลงเสียง ถือว่ายอดมาก presentation ก็ทำมาได้ดี ....

แถมเรื่องนี้ โฆษณา Apple ชัดๆ มี shot ที่ถ่าย PowerBook สวยๆ หลาย shot เลยทีเดียว และมีภาพ Gore ใช้ PowerBook ตลอด ด้วยท่าทางเหมือนกับคนที่ใช้ PowerBook รุ่นแรก (ในโฆษณาเก่าของ Apple ตัวหนึ่ง ที่ผมก็จำไม่ได้ว่าตัวไหน)

กำลังคิดว่าจะเอา Idea การ present แบบนี้ (ยกคำว่า Inconvenient Truth เลย) ไป present เรื่องสถานการณ์ software ในบ้านเรา หรือว่าศักยภาพที่เรามี ในคราวนี้ที่ได้ไป lecture เรื่องพวกนี้เหมือนกัน

Programming Tutorial Blog

กำลังคิดว่าจะทำ web blog อีกอันหนึ่ง เขียน tutorial ง่ายๆ ของ C++ STL, Ruby, Python เก็บไว้ในลักษณะของ Cookbook บ้าง Demonstration บ้าง เป็นพักๆ

อาจจะ post สองที่นะ ที่นี่กับที่ ThaiMacDev เพราะว่าเรา(แทบจะ)ไม่เคยเขียนอะไรลงที่นั่นเลยทั้งๆ ที่เป็นคนตั้งมันขึ้นมาคนหนึ่ง (แต่ว่าต้องยกความดีความชอบให้ apirak มากกว่า เพราะว่าเค้า contribute ให้ที่นั่นเยอะจริงๆ)

คิดว่ายังไงบ้าง ช่วยส่งความคิดมาที่ rawitat[at]cp.su.ac.th (แทน [at] ด้วย @ นะ .. ที่ทำแบบนี้เพราะกัน mail mining spider) นะครับ เพราะว่า blog นี้มันเขียน comment ไม่ได้ หรือว่าจะ msn มาก็ได้ (เฉพาะคนที่รู้จักผมและมี msn ผมอยู่แล้วนะ ขออนุญาตไม่แจกเพิ่ม)

Information in Reality

เร็วๆ นี้พี่นีย์ (อ.สุนีย์) มาคุยด้วยเรื่องอยากจะให้เปิดสอนวิชา Information Theory (อาทิตย์ก่อนแกมายืมหนังสือเรื่องนี้ไปอ่าน) ก็เลยยืน lecture ให้แกฟังหน่อย เรื่องพื้นๆ ฐานๆ แล้วก็ทำไมเด็ก com sci หรือว่า IT ถึงควรจะเรียนเรื่องพวกนี้ไว้บ้าง .. จริงๆ แล้วในยุคที่อะไรๆ มันก็เป็นการสื่อสารหมดแบบนี้ หรือว่าเรามองอะไรๆ ว่าเป็นรูปแบบหนึ่งของการส่งข้อมูลแบบนี้ เรื่องแบบนี้ยิ่งกลายเป็นเรื่องพื้นฐานของอะไรหลายๆ อย่างเข้าไปใหญ่ (เด็กชีวะก็น่าเรียนนะ เพราะว่า DNA ก็ทำนองนั้นแหละ ..)

แต่ว่า blog นี้จะพูดคนละประเด็นกันนะ ไม่ใช่จะพูดถึงเรื่อง Information Theory หรอก แต่ว่าพอดีวันนี้เข้ากรุงเทพ มาถ่ายรูปรถถัง เอ๊ย ไม่ใช่ๆ มาดูหนังเรื่อง The Inconvenient Truth ที่สกาล่า ก็เลยมาเดินเล่นที่ Siam Discovery เพื่อซื้อหนังสือ วารสาร (แต่ว่าก่อนหน้านี้แวะไปซื้อวารสาร Software Development ญี่ปุ่นที่ Kinokuniya, Central World มาแล้ว) แล้วก็แวะๆ ดูร้าน Apple Center หน่อย ก่อนจะกินกาแฟนั่งทำงาน (ตอนที่เขียน blog นี่แหละ) ตามกิจกรรมปกติที่ทำทุกทีเวลามาที่นี่

เรื่องมันเกิดขึ้นตอนที่เดินดูของใน Apple Center (หาซื้อ Sleeve ให้ MacBook สีขาวเครื่องใหม่ซะหน่อย แล้วก็เหล่ๆ iPod nano รุ่นใหม่ด้วย กล่องมันเล็กสะใจดีจริงๆ) ก็เสียมารยาทยืนฟังพนักงานคนหนึ่งของร้าน (ซึ่งคงทำหน้าที่เป็นพวก support เพราะว่าท่าทางรู้เรื่องโน้นเรื่องนี้ดีหน่อย เทียบกับพนักงานขายคนอื่น) คุยกับ(ว่าที่)ลูกค้าคนหนึ่ง เรื่อง Windows on Mac

ได้ยิน Information ที่มันฟังดูเหมือนจะถูก แต่ว่ามันไม่ถูก(ว่ะ) เยอะมาก เช่น

Windows มันถูกสร้างมาจาก C code แต่ว่า Mac มันเขียนมาจาก code อื่น เลยทำให้อ่านกันไม่ได้
Mac อ่านไฟล์จาก Windows ได้ แต่ว่าเขียนไม่ได้ ต้อง copy ใส่ USB Thumb Drive เวลาจะ copy ไฟล์กันระหว่าง Windows-Mac ในเครื่องเดียวกัน
ระบบไฟล์มันต่างกัน นามสกุลเลยต่างกัน
แนะนำลูกค้าว่า ลง Windows ในเครื่อง Mac ไม่ต้องลง Antivirus หรอก ผม(คนขาย) ก็ไม่ลง
อื่นๆ จิปาถะ เกี่ยวกับ Power management & Sleep mode

ไอ้เราก็ยืนฟังด้วยความรู้สึกแบบ...

มันเกี่ยวกันตรงไหนวะ
ก็พี่ท่านเล่นใช้ NTFS มากกว่าล่ะมั้ง ถ้าเป็น FAT32 ก็ไม่มีปัญหา (ซึ่งตรงนี้ในเอกสารของ BootCamp ก็เขียนแนะนำไว้ด้วยว่าให้ใช้ FAT32)
เหรอ .. เพิ่งจะรู้นะเนี่ย ใช้ File system มาจริงๆ จังๆ ตั้ง 5-6 อย่าง (ทั้ง xfs, zfs, ext2, ext3, .... ) ไม่เคยได้ยิน/เจอ เรื่องแบบนี้เลย
จะบ้าเรอะ?!?!
อื่นๆ จิปาถะ เช่นกัน

จริงๆ แล้วการพยายามจะให้ Information เนี่ย เป็นเรื่องดีนะ และเท่าที่ฟังๆ ดู โดยรวมก็ไม่ได้ผิดอะไรมากมายจนคอขาดหรอก (บางทีอาจารย์มหาวิทยาลัยหลายๆ ท่านยังไม่ค่อยรู้เรื่องพวกนี้ละเอียดเท่าไหร่เลย แต่ว่าก็ lecture เด็กผิดๆ ถูกๆ หน้าตาเฉย ว่าก็ไม่ได้ด้วย) แต่ว่ามันก็ผิดเหมือนกัน

เรื่องที่มันควรจะเป็นก็คือ เราไม่ควรคิดว่าตัวเองรู้อะไรดีแล้ว พอแล้ว สิ่งที่เรารู้คือถูกต้องแล้ว ... เพราะว่าไม่งั้นนะ เราจะไม่รู้สิ่งที่ถูกต้อง สิ่งที่พัฒนาขึ้นตามมา สิ่งที่มันเป็นจริงๆ สิ่งที่มันลึกลงไป สิ่งที่ ฯลฯ เราน่าจะทำตัวเป็นนักศึกษาที่ดี การที่เราคิดว่าเรารู้อะไรซักอย่างนึงเนี่ย มันก็ดีอยู่หรอกนะ แต่ว่่ามันจะดีกว่านั้น ถ้าเราทำตัวไม่รู้อะไรเกี่ยวกับสิ่งนั้นบ้าง เราจะได้ศึกษามันมากขึ้นเพื่อให้รู้มากขึ้น เช่นนะ

เด็ก Com Sci คิดว่าตัวเองรู้จัก Operating System ก็น่าจะลองศึกษา Linux, *BSD ดูบ้าง ลองศึกษา Monolithic kernel กับ Microkernel บ้าง
เด็ก Com Sci คิดว่าตัวเองรู้จัก OOP ก็น่าจะลองเล่น SmallTalk บ้าง
เด็ก Com Sci คิดว่าตัวเองรู้จัก Web Programming เคยเล่น Ruby on Rails บ้างมั้ย หรือว่าถ้าจะบอกว่า PHP ก็พอแล้ว ก็เคยเล่น Cake หรือว่าตัวอืนๆ บ้างมั้ย
Apache Axis, Cocoon, Strut, พวกนี้คืออะไรเคยเล่นบ้างหรือเปล่า?
เคยเขียนโปรแกรมแต่กับ Turbo C ...เคยลองโผล่หน้าไปดูโลกบ้างมั้ยว่า C standard ปีไหนๆ มันมีอะไรใหม่ๆ บ้าง C++ ปี 98 หรือว่าหลังจากนั้นเป็นยังไง STL รู้จักมั้ย?
เคยเขียนโปรแกรมแต่กับ Turbo C ...เคยได้ยิน Eclipse หรือเปล่า?

เรียน Database มา เคยสนใจบ้างมั้ย เรื่อง OODB ข้อดีข้อเสียเทียบกับ RDB หรือว่าก่อนหน้านั้น เคยถามคำถามพื้นๆ บ้างมั้ย ว่าโครงสร้างข้อมูลของมันเป็นยังไง optimization ของ query ทำยังไง
เรื่องอื่นๆ จิปาถะนะ เรื่อง technology awareness ของตัวเองล่ะดีแค่ไหน?
ไม่ใช่แค่กับวิชาคอมพิวเตอร์นะ เรียน Stat มาเนี่ย รู้บ้างหรือเปล่า ว่าอะไรล่ะ รอบๆ ตัวที่มันเป็น binomial distribution หรือว่าเป็น Poisson distribution ไม่ใช่แค่ท่องตำรา เรียน Calculus มาเนี่ย เคยคิดบ้างหรือเปล่าว่าอะไรรอบๆ ตัวที่มันอธิบายได้ด้วย Differential Equation เรียน Discrete Maths มาเนี่ย อะไรบ้างรอบๆ ตัวที่มันเป็น Discrete Structure?

ก็เข้าใจล่ะนะ ว่าทุกวันนี้ปริญญามันสำคัญ แต่ว่ามีอะไรที่มากกว่า bare minimum ติดตัวไปซักนิดนึงก็คงจะไม่มีใครว่าอะไรหรอกมั้ง (หรือว่ารู้มากไป ทำอะไรได้มากไป แล้วเจ้านายจะด่า จะทำงานไม่ได้ หาคนแต่งงานด้วยยาก บุพการีเสียดายตังค์ส่่งเสียเรียน? ... วันก่อนประชุมเรื่องประกันคุณภาพภายใน ท่านประธานกรรมการก็บอกเสียงดังฟังชัดดี ว่าเด็กบ้านเรามันไม่รักดีเทียบกับเด็กสิงคโปร์)

Information เนี่ย สำคัญครับ ช่วยกันกระจายได้ก็ช่วยกันไป แต่ว่าช่วยตรวจสอบความถูกต้องของ Information นั้นๆ ด้วยนะ โดยเฉพาะเวลาให้ Information กับคนที่ไม่รู้เรื่องนั้นมาก่อน เพราะว่าคนที่ไม่รู้อะไรเนี่ย ก็เปรียบเหมือนกับผ้าขาว เอาสีอะไรย้อมมันก็เป็นสีนั้น หลังจากนั้นจะย้อมสีอะไรทับ มันก็ยังจะมีอิทธิพลจากสีแรกมาอยู่ดี เป็นเหมือนราคีทางความรู้ที่ไม่มีวันหายไปได้

First Impression เนี่ย เรื่องใหญ่และแก้ยากนะครับ คนเราได้ยินอะไรเป็นครั้งแรก มักจะเชื่อว่าเรื่องนั้นๆ ถูกต้อง เพราะว่าไม่มีความรู้พื้นฐานมาประกอบความคิด ต่อให้มีวิจารณญาณแค่ไหนก็เถอะครับ เป็นไปไม่ได้หรอก ที่จะคิดพิจารณาเรื่องที่ตัวเองไม่มีความรู้เกี่ยวข้องเลย ว่าถูกต้องหรือไม่

ดังนั้น ก็คงต้องขอความร่วมมือกันดื้อๆ เอาแถวๆ นี้แหละครับ ไว้จะพูดในรายการวิทยุ MCOT 100.5 วันศุกร์สิ้นเดือนอีกที

This post will be written deliberately in English (and some Japanese).

I started developing a feeling of tiredness once in a while, regarding students and people and works in general. I think we have wrong attitude toward works and teaching. Also we have too little understanding and awareness of how our students actually are.

I could not summarize in any short word how students are actually. Even though a few Japanese words might help me a bit:

出来が悪すぎる & 経験がなさ過ぎる

Students can't do even little projects. Well, that's not the beginning.

I recently found that a lot of 4th year students, who should be ready for doing their graduation project, can't even write a simple program to get some input and check if it's a palindrome or not. A lot of them have struggling with finding prime numbers too. It's funny that students in my lab help me tested them with 1st year exercises (7 problems) and most of them took more than 5 hours and can't finish them all.

I talked to some 2nd year students recently and not-very-recently too. I know that this might not be a good sampling population, but I also know that one of whom I talked to is happened to be do OK in programming compared with his friends.

I asked one of them to write a program to greet her 5 times on the console. 10 minutes, she can't do it. I asked one another to write a program to just output elements in array of dummy type (T) of unknown length. He wrote:

strlen(a[]) = n;

Shocked, I asked him does he know about the lvalue and rvalue. He doesn't. Fine. I tried to explain and then he could correct it.

Again, this showed how inexperience students are with coding.

My recommendation to the department is to have a research lab system where we can give them more experience and tackle more difficult projects and problems than these. But not everyone agree. Some even said that students should work on their own and once they have enough experience I could hire/get them into the lab and working on research project that I got the grant.

How would that explain all the students I mentioned above? Thai students have wrong attitude about studying and love spoon feeding. If I give them problems to solve on their own and throw books and advise to them and ask them to study and come to meet me once a week, do you know what will happen?

I tried. All gone.

I know that space are sacred in my department and not everyone could have privilege to use it. However, I do not agree with keeping them unused either. I know it isn't fair for other students, but I don't think that would be a reason to abandon them all. Now, abandoning every student is a little fairness we could give them. But what's the point?

I talked to Hirokawa recently and mentioned to him that I gave up trying to educate every students. I rather keep just 10% of each year. I do think it make a lot of sense.

In my department, not everyone could come everyday. So why not give some space where people who comes everyday could gather students and teach them how to work, exclusively? I do not agree on waiting for them to be good at software development and programming and have enough computer science knowledge ... and then ask them to work with me for their graduation projects.

Most 4th year students aren't in that level, even now. They shocked me.

Now, once again in a while, I questioned my wisdom and intention and ideology about coming back and work in university, where I could teach people and help improve the education and help doing projects. I questioned myself had I destroyed my own potential and ability of who I could become and what I could do.

I questioned the impossibility: if I could make that choice, once again.

มีหลายเสียงเรียกร้องอยากให้เขียน version ภาษาไทยของ blog entry อันก่อน ก็เลยเขียนซะ ฉลองศรัทธา

มันเป็นเรื่องของ พลังจุด หรือ จุดมีพลัง .... ก็แปลชื่อตรงๆ จากโปรแกรมมันน่ะแหละ [Powerpoint] ที่เป็นจุดเริ่มของความน่าเบื่อสุดๆ หลายอย่าง จริงๆ เบื่อจนไม่อยากจะนึกถึงมันด้วยซ้ำไป

ตั้งแต่ใช้ Mac มา ก็คิดว่าหนีมันพ้นแล้วเชียวนะ (เพราะว่าเปลี่ยนมาใช้ Keynote จากชุด iWork) แต่ว่าเร็วๆ นี้ เนื่องจากต้องเข้าฟัง seminar ของนักศึกษาทั้งปริญญาตรี ปริญญาโทเยอะ ที่นักศึกษาต้องมา present งานวิจัยหรือว่างานวิจัยชาวบ้าน (paper ชาวบ้าน) ... ความเป็นจริงอันโหดร้ายก็บอกเราว่า เรายังหนีมันไม่พ้นหรอก ดีไม่ดีจะไม่มีวันหนีพ้นด้วย (จริงๆ บอกว่านักศึกษามา present ก็ไม่ถูกนักหรอก เพราะว่าแทบจะร้อยทั้งร้อย มันไม่ใช่การ present ... เรียกมันว่าออกมานั่งพ่น slide ดีกว่า

ก็เลยนึกสนุก เปิด Powerpoint 2007 beta ขึ้นมาดู user-interface จากมุมมองของ Human-Computer Interaction กับ Usability หน่อย เพราะว่าปกติแล้วการทำงานของผู้ใช้น่ะ มันก็ถูกตีกรอบด้วยลักษณะการทำงานของโปรแกรม ความคิดของคนที่เป็นผู้ใช้ ทั้งโดยตรงโดยอ้อม (คนที่สร้าง presentation และคนที่ฟัง presentation) ก็ถูกตีกรอบด้วยโปรแกรม ...

เจออะไรบางอย่างที่ shock ยิ่งกว่าดูหนังสยองขวัญตอนตีสองอีก.....

ก่อนอื่น ดูอะไรน่าสนใจจาก Keynote ก่อนละกัน .... นี่คือ main interface ที่เราจะเห็นตลอดเวลา เหนือพื้นที่แก้ไข presentation (โดยที่ผมเปิด option ให้แสดงทั้ง text และ icon .. ปกติจะใช้ icon อย่างเดียว)

ทุกอย่างมัน obvious .. มันเห็นได้ชัดเจนมาก ในฐานะของคนๆ หนึ่งที่ present บ่อย (ทั้ง internal ทั้ง public) และสอนหนังสือด้วย สิ่งที่ผมต้องทำประจำก็คือ เพิ่ม slide และ present นอกจากนั้นก็แล้วแต่กรณี ต้องเปลี่ยนวิวบ้าง (เพราะว่าบางทีเราอยากจะดู thumbnail ของ slide ทั้งหมด บางทีอยากเห็น master slide) ต้องเปลี่ยน theme บ้าง ต้องเปลี่ยน master layout สำหรับ slide ปัจจุบันบ้าง

เรามาดูที่ฝั่งพลังจุดกันบ้าง

โอ๊ะโอ!!! .... อะไรวะเนี่ย!!!

ไม่แปลกใจเลยแฮะ ที่ slide พลังจุดส่วนมาก จะเป็น rip-off, copy & paste มาจากที่ไหนซักที ส่วนมากก็จาก word doc หรือ website ... เพราะว่า Paste มันเป็น dominant function นี่เอง (จริงๆ แล้วมันคงเป็นปัญหาไก่กับไข่ เนื่องจากคนส่วนมากทำ slide พลังจุดด้วย copy & paste; ctrl+c ctrl+v ... ทาง MS เลยสร้าง Paste ให้กลายเป็น dominant function ไป เพราะว่าไปดู Powerpoint รุ่นก่อนมา มันก็ไม่ใช่แบบนี้)

เรื่องนั้นช่างมัน ... ยอมรับมันไป ว่าแต่ ไอ้ปุ่มที่จะเข้า present mode มันอยู่ไหนหว่า

เพ่งหน้าจออยู่นาน เหมือนเล่นเกมจับผิดภาพ

กรี๊ด!!!! เจอแล้ว!!!!

ไม่น่าแปลกใจเลยแฮะ ที่นักศึกษาแทบทั้งหมดที่เราเข้าไปฟัง ไม่ได้ give presentation (คือ การมานั่งอ่าน slide ไปเรื่อยๆ สำหรับผมแล้ว มันไม่ใช่ presentation) หรือว่าไม่ได้เอาตัวเองเข้าไปใน presenter mode เพราะว่า ... presentation มันไม่ใช่เรื่องสลักสำคัญอะไรกับพลังจุด การเอา slide เข้า presentation mode มันไม่ใช่เรื่องสลักสำคัญฉันใด ผู้ใช้ก็ไม่ต้องเข้า presenter mode ฉันนั้น

สำหรับผมแล้ว โปรแกรมพลังจุด หรือ Powerpoint นี่ไม่ใช่แค่นี้ แต่มันยังต้องรับผิดชอบกับการทำลายความคิดสร้างสรรค์ (creativity) ทำลายจินตนาการ (imagination) อีกมากมาย

ไม่มีอีกแล้ว ที่เราจะต้องสร้างจิตนการเวลาฟัง lecture ที่คนบรรยายจะพยายามสร้างภาพอะไรบางอย่างขึ้นมา และเราจะต้องพยายามนึกภาพนั้นตาม ซึ่งเนื่องจากแต่ละคนจะนึกไม่เหมือนกัน ดังนั้นสิ่งที่แต่ละคนได้ไป ก็จะขึ้นกับพลังในการสร้างสรรค์ของจินตนาการของตัวเอง ทำให้โลกเจริญขึ้นมาได้ เพราะว่าเกิด biodiversity ทางความคิด ความหลากหลายต่างๆ นานา ฯลฯ ไม่ใช่แค่นั้น คนที่ทำหน้าที่ present ก็ไม่ต้องคิดมากอีกต่อไป ว่าจะทำยังไงถึงจะขายฝัน ขายไอเดีย ขายแนวคิด ขายสิ่งที่ตัวเองค้นพบ ขายข้อมูล ฯลฯ อำนาจของการ convince ที่ตกต่ำลงอย่างน่าใจหาย (ลองคิดสิ ว่าเคยฟัง academic presentation หรือว่า business presentation ที่มัน so convincing ครั้งสุดท้ายเมื่อไหร่?)

และอะไรเกิดขึ้นตามมา? เราทำ slide เพื่อเตรียม present กันยังไงล่ะ? เราใช้มันแทน word ใช่มั้ย? ด้วยข้ออ้างเลวๆ ว่านักศึกษาสามารถนำไปอ่านทบทวนได้ในภายหลังใช่มั้ย?

นี่แหละคือ disaster ของจริง ทำไมงั้นเหรอ?

ง่ายๆ เพราะว่า Presentation มันไม่ใช่ Document มันไม่ได้ถูกสร้างขึ้นมาเพื่อเป็น comprehensive document หรือว่าเพื่ออ่าน ศึกษา โน่นนี่ ตั้งแต่ต้นแล้ว เนื้อหารายละเอียด ควรจะอยู่ในหนังสือ หรือว่า handout ที่เป็น text (ไม่ใช่ slide-printout 6 หน้าต่อแผ่น etc) ลักษณะการเขียนก็ไม่เหมือนกันแล้ว ผมไม่ขอบรรยายรายละเอียดมากนะ ลองอ่านนี่ดูจะเข้าใจมากขึ้น (link จาก Presentation Zen)

เมื่อเราเลือกเนื้อหามาลง slide เราจะต้อง reformat แล้ว reformat อีก ตัดแล้วตัดอีก เพื่อให้ font มันพอจะมองเห็นได้ อ่านออก จากหลังห้อง lecture และไม่พอ เรายังสร้างกรอบที่ไม่จำเป็นในการ presentation ให้ตัวเองอีกด้วย แทนที่เราจะให้ hint, clue ตัวเองด้วย symbol อะไรซักอย่าง และพูดออกไปจาก symbol นั้นๆ ด้วยประสบการณ์ ความเข้าใจ และสถานการณ์ระหว่าง presentation เรากลับเอา text มาเยอะแยะ และบังคับให้ตัวเองต้องพูดตามนั้น ซึ่งส่งผลเสียต่อมาอีกมากมาย เช่น

การ present จะไม่ dynamic หรือ flexible พอที่จะ adapt ไปตามสิ่งที่คนฟังต้องการจะฟังได้ และเมื่อคนฟังไม่ฟัง เราก็จบ ในฐานะคนพูด อย่ามาอ้างว่าเป็นอาจารย์ ยังไงนักศึกษาต้องฟัง นี่คุณกำลังโยนความรับผิดชอบ โยนสิ่งที่คุณเป็นคนก่อขึ้นมาเอง ให้กับนักศึกษา อ้างหน้าที่ โดยไม่ดูก่อนว่าหน้าที่ตัวเองคืออะไร
คนที่ฟังจะนึกภาพไม่ออกหรอก ว่าไอ้สิ่งที่เราพูดๆ ไปเนี่ย มันเกี่ยวอะไรกับโลกรอบๆ ตัวเค้า สิ่งที่เค้ามีประสบการณ์ หรือว่ามองเห็นอยู่แล้ว
ทุกคนจะคิดว่า อ่านจาก slide มันพอ ไม่ต้องไปอ่านหนังสือเพิ่มเติม เพราะว่า slide มันทำมาให้อ่านทบทวน ... ถ้าคุณไม่คิดว่าตรงนี้มันผิด หรือว่ามันแม่งๆ ก็ไม่รู้จะว่ายังไงแล้วนะครับ เพราะว่า slide น่ะ มันทั้งติดแล้วตัดอีก reformat แล้ว reformat อีก ย่อแล้วย่ออีก สุดท้ายคนที่ฟังคนที่เรียน ได้อะไรที่มัน so bare minimum
คุณเป็นคนไม่มีตัวตน ใครก็นั่งอ่าน slide คุณได้เหมือนคุณน่ะแหละ แทนที่คุณจะ communicate กับคนที่ฟัง สร้าง ecosystem ของความเข้าใจ ฯลฯ

สิ่งที่สำคัญที่สุด คือ ไอ้ slide พลังจุดแบบนั้นน่ะ มันเน้น มันย้ำ มันก่อให้เกิด การท่องจำแบบนกแก้ว ยิ่งไปกว่าอะไรทั้งหมดที่เคยมีมา ลองคิดเอาเองละกันครับว่าทำไม ทดสอบ creativity & imagination ของตัวเองซะหน่อย

ถ้าจะให้ผมเลือกนะ สิ่งที่ทำลายความคิด ความฝัน อำนาจการสร้างสรรค์ จินตนาการ และการศึกษา มากกว่าอะไรทั้งนั้นสำหรับการศึกษาระดับอุดมศึกษาในยุคนี้นะ ผมเลือก Powerpoint โดยไม่ต้องคิดซ้ำสองให้เสียเวลา

Got sick of Powerpoint. Yes. Another YES.

I thought I had escaped from it, saving my sanity with Apple's amazing Keynote (part of its iWork suite, one of the original reasons I bought my first PowerBook). However, reality told me I haven't and probably can't.

Recently I have to attend lots of student seminar (not my own lab's seminar, almost everyone uses Keynote and blackboard here). Most of them with poorly made Powerpoint presentation. Oops, sorry, mostly there aren't presentation either. Most of them are slide-reading driods.

I took a hard look at Powerpoint 2007 beta, from a Human-Computer Interaction and Usability point of view. I looked hard at the interface and how it dictates a user's workflow, and I found out something that shocked me.

In Keynote, here is the main interface (I turned on Text option, normally I use Icon-only here):

Things are pretty obvious. As someone who often give presentation & lecture, here are things I do the most: Add more slides, and Present it. I generally, from time to time, has to rearrange the view, change the theme for a certain slide, and use different master slide layout.

I looked at Powerpoint 2007, here's terror:

What? Well, no wonder. Most students I saw in the seminar made their slides by pasting text from somewhere, most notably Word Documents and Web Sites. And where is the Present mode button?

I searched for it, and it is located near the bottom right of the screen. A tiny button, obscurity compared to the Paste panel:

Well, no wonder. Student are NOT giving presentation. Not only students but lots of lecturers also teach by slide-reading and bullet-mumbling. Presentation is not important from Powerpoint perspective.

Powerpoint not only accounted for destroying one's ability to give present creatively, it also destroy imagination. No longer would one have to think creative and build the world up from a black backboard, no longer things will be visual. Everything is bulleted, listed, and worded. This encourages rote-memorization more than anything else.

So, if I have a chance to single out a worse source of disaster for this generation's level of education, creativity in work, and imagination, I'd single out Powerpoint without any hesitation.

[Note to self: maybe you are just sick of seeing too much poorly-made presentations, too many slide-reading students (who probably seeing too many lecturers doing that), too many bullets.

Giving Leopard Developer Preview Another Try

After playing with Leopard DP for a while during WWDC, I decided it isn't ready as a main OS.

Today I made another decision, I am ready for the rough edge. I don't do anything much fancy nowadays and probably in need of an adventure, sort of (yeah, this would explain why I even bother with Nevada, Nexenta, etc). So I'm giving Leopard DP I got from WWDC another try. (Xcode and Core Animation alone are so tempting. I'm not exciting about the Time Machine until I know for certain what will become of the file system).

I was thinking of installing it on my old iPod 3G and retiring it to be just my playground for Leopard DP. But, hmm, on the second thought, let's not do that and install it as a main OS.

Mind you, it is **not ready** as a main OS. Things will change and a lot of things are ugly. Problems everywhere. After installed it today as upgrade of an existing OS (10.4.7), I already submitted 5-6 problems to Apple. Also, some problems with Interface Builder. The problem that wasn't there when I installed it clean during WWDC. So, well, nevermind, I reinstalled it again, clean. That specific problem with Interface Builder is now gone. So it's an upgrade bug.

Also, here and there, some (lots of) software do not work. OK, I can live with that. If the software is open source, then I can grab the code and try to compile it and see what happens. Some works, some doesn't work still. Now, that's fun. (Trying to figure out how to get the X11 works in Debian-SPARC is fun, too .. but tiring).

Annoying bugs persist, too. But that's normal for software at this stage.

Those of you who are downloading Leopard off the torrent or get it from any other where, hoping to play with cool new toy please be ware: It's not ready.

Also, do not ask me to compare Leopard Developer Preview to Windows Vista RC1, one is a Developer Preview, while another is a Release Candidate, which means one is a far cry from release while another is already a candidate for the final release. It would be comparing Apple (no pun intended) to Orange.

Nexenta GNU/OpenSolaris on Dell Inspiron 8100

Tried another OS recently. Nexenta Alpha 5.

I didn't expect it to just work like Ubuntu. I just wanted to know whether a Slowaris, sorry Solaris,-based OS with GNU-userland will be fast enough for that old machine or not, comparing to MS Vista running on a P4 3.0.

Installation didn't take that long, comparing to Solaris 10 x86 from Sun on another Dell (Inspiron 4150) and Solaris Nevada on Sun Ultra 80. Managed to start it up ... BUT ..

Well, screen resolution at 640x480. I tried to find the xorg.conf file to reconfigure. All I found is xorg.conf.old with something about Wacom input devices. Why are those lines? I copied that file to xorg.conf and commented out those lines. Xorg didn't start. Something about the fbdevhw driver. I changed the display driver to nv but it still doesn't work. Also it seems to mess up the keymap. So when I type anything in the console, anything will turn to garbage.

Nexenta looks & sounds promising, and I'd been eager to try it (but sadly, there isn't enough machines in our lab so I could play with any OS). However, this time ... hands up. Until next time, maybe the Beta or (hopefully) Released version.

[Updated 06/09/06] Ended up installing the latest Ubuntu Edgy Eft Knot 2. Still got the VGA problem during the installation. Normal for that Inspiron 8100 anyway.

OpenSolaris Nevada Build 46 Sparc

Spent a night downloaded a DVD ISO image.

Burnt it this morning. Walked to one of the SPARC machines in the lab. Placed the DVD into the drive. Reboot. Stop+A. Typed

Doesn't work. Bad magic number (what is that? ... very informative message)

Went to Sun's support forum website, Toshiba DVD-ROM firmware need patching. Going to get busy this afternoon. Forget it. Will download and install it later. Seems a bit lousy. Will report back later.

Might end up downloading just the CD image (5 CDs) though.

แต่ว่าเท่าที่ดูนะ ทีมปีนี้ดีทีเดียว ตั้งแต่ รุด ฟาน นิสเตลรอย ไปเนี่ย กลับมาเล่นเป็นระบบ ลื่นไหล ขึ้นกว่าเดิมเยอะ จริงๆ อยากจะบอกว่า ระบบทีมที่มัน fluid และ flexible แบบนี้น่ะ มันเสียไปตั้งแต่ปีนั้นแหละ ที่ รุด กับ ฮวน เวรอน เข้ามาน่ะแหละ แทนที่จะเล่นเป็นทีมเวิร์คแบบไดนามิกส์ดีๆ ดันกลายเป็น player-centric มากไป ไม่ค่อยเหมือนแมนฯ ยูฯ เท่าไหร่เลย

แต่ว่าปีนี้ตั้งแต่ต้นปี ก็เห็นผีทีมเก่าล่ะนะ เห็น โรนัลโด้ รูนีย์ ซาฮา กิ๊กจส์ เล่นนัดแรกแล้วสบายใจ เพลินดี พอมานัดที่สอง ก็ยังค่อนข้างเข้าท่าอยู่ แต่ว่าพอนัดที่สามนี่สิ อาการชักจะออก ปัญหาก็เริ่มจะส่อเค้าบ้าง

คาร์ริค ยังไม่เข้าระบบเท่าไหร่ เพิ่งจะหายเจ็บด้วย ยังไม่เข้าที่ ไม่ขอพูดถึง แต่ว่าก็มีแววจะเล่นดี

ปัญหาที่แนวรับยังแก้ไม่หายซักที การสลับตำแหน่งโน่นนี่โดยไม่จำเป็นเนี่ยแหละ ตัวปัญหาหลักอย่างหนึ่งของพักหลังๆ เลย โอเช คงงงๆ เหมือนกันว่าสรุปจะให้เอาดีทางด้านไหนกันแน่ ซิสแวสท์ เป็นบ่อน้ำมันเหมือนเดิม ถึงจะยิงได้ก็เถอะ หน้าที่กองหลัง วัดกันที่ความไม่เป็นบ่อน้ำมัน และความไว้วางใจได้ และความเด็ดขาดของการเล่นเกมรับ มากกว่านับจำนวนประตูที่ทำได้ ... เห็นการสกัดลูกไปเข้าเท้าฝ่ายตรงข้ามเหน่งๆ หน้ากรอบประตูตัวเองของมิเคล แล้วบอกตรงๆ ว่า ถ้าเป็น รุด โอเวน รูนีย์ หรือแม้แต่กองหน้าโนเนม (แต่คม) หลายคน นี่ไม่เหลือแล้วแน่ๆ

กองกลาง กองหน้า ได้ตัวที่เจ็บๆ ไป กลับมาเยอะ ก็มีหลายคนบอกว่า เหมือนได้ตัวใหม่น่ะแหละ อันนี้เห็นด้วย

ปัญหาที่ตามมา คือ ถ้ามีคนเจ็บล่ะ ยิ่งขี้โรคกันอยู่ด้วย ...พวกตัวสำรองจะเล่นไหวเหรอ เพราะว่าวันก่อนนี่ เอาริซาร์ดสันลงมาเล่น ไม่รู้เอาลงมาทำไมเหมือนกัน ลงมาทำเสียจังหวะซะงั้นแหละ

อีกคนนะ คุณเจ้าชายมหัศจรรย์สุดยอดพรสวรรค์แห่งสก๊อตแลนด์+ลูกรักท่านเซอร์เฟอร์กี้ (The Wonder Miracle Prince of Scotland, Love Son of Sir Alex) ... ปีนี้เหมือนจะเล่นดีขึ้น แต่ว่าสรุปก็ยังเป็นผู้เล่นคนที่ 11 อยู่ดี จ่ายบอลเสียมากกว่าดี คุมเกมไม่อยู่ จังหวะยังมั่วอยู่ เล่นตามน้ำมากไป ฯลฯ ก็มีแววมากขึ้นกว่าเมื่อก่อนแหละ การพัฒนาดีขึ้น แต่ว่ายังดาดๆ เกินไปนิด เทียบกับ ปาร์ก จี ซอง ที่ปีนี้ดันโดนดันไปเล่นกองหน้าซะมากกว่า ทั้งๆ ที่เค้าไม่ใช่คนที่เหมาะกับการเล่นตรงนั้นเท่าไหร่

ปัญหาจริงๆ ของแมนฯ ยูฯ ปีนี้ ก็ยังคงเป็น การทดแทน ผู้เล่นชุดหลัก เวลาเจ็บ/ลงไม่ได้ เหมือนเดิมน่ะแหละ ตัวหลักๆ ที่มีอยู่น่ะ ก็ดีแล้ว ยิ่งจะดัน อลัน สมิท กลับไปเล่นกองหน้าด้วยแล้วนี่ คิดว่าคงจะแก้ปัญหากองหน้าไปได้เยอะ แทนที่จะเอาเตเบซ หรือว่า เทรซ นะ เชื่อใจสมิท กับให้โอกาสรอซซี่ ดีกว่าเยอะ สมิทเล่นได้ดีมากอยู่แล้ว กับบอลอังกฤษ อย่าคิดเอาไปเล่นกลางรับอีกละกัน ให้โอเชเล่นไปน่ะดีแล้ว (อย่าเอาคีแรนไปเล่นด้วย) ส่วนรอซซี่นี่มีอนาคตมากๆ อย่าตัดไฟเด็กมันจะดีกว่า

Made a terrible error today.

When installing some software from source, I usually configured with

--prefix=/usr/local/softwarename

for sake of manageability and clarity.

Now, I want to remove apache2, which I incorrectly configured and rebuild it. Removing it was simply enough

sudo rm -rf /usr/local/apache2

Plus commenting out a few lines in my profile.

Then, I wanted to see what's there, so naturally the command is:

ls /usr/local

There! I made it

sudo rm -rf /usr/local

And, BOOM!, (almost) gone for good! ... I only realized that a few seconds later that it's taking too long just to list the content of a directory. Looking at the command, and oh my god.

Luckily that it was /usr/local which contains only the software/lib I installed it myself anyway. If it's /usr I would be it much more troubles, since a complete reinstallation of the OS is likely required. And I don't know if that will effect anything should I require a backup of my critical data before reinstalling the OS.

Have to be careful the next time. Don't full around too much with rm -rf.

Yes, an announcement from the official website. Changes are listed here (eigenclass.org, Mauricio Fernandez).

However, according to the mailing list post by Matsumoto Yukihiro (Matz) himself, this is a bug fix and stability improvement release and should have no big difference from 1.8.4.

I will not be installing this version anytime soon. At least until someone who knows Rails more than I do test it first. I don't know enough of Rails/Ruby to find problems.

สยองสุดๆ..... ถ้าช่วงที่กลับมาจากอเมริกาตอนไป WWDC แล้วลืม iPod ไว้ในห้องน้ำแบบนั้นบ้างเนี่ย จะเป็นไงหว่า สงสัยจะโดน blacklist ห้ามเข้าอเมริกาไปเลยมั้ง

ถึงจะรู้สึกว่าทำเกินเหตุไปบ้าง แต่ว่าก็ว่าแบบนั้นไม่รู้จะได้หรือเปล่าแฮะ โดนแบบ 9/11 ไปครั้งนึง คนก็คงจะ paranoid ไปนานหลายปีเป็นเรื่องธรรมดา แล้วก็มีข่าวเรื่องแผนการวางระเบิดเร็วๆ นี้อีก ... แต่ว่ายิ่งอ่านยิ่งมีความรู้สึกว่าทำเกินเหตุจริงๆ โดยเฉพาะพวก ground stuff ที่เหมือนกับจะเล่นตามน้ำ โชว์พาว ได้เนียนมากๆ

ยิ่งมีเรื่อง battery ระเบิดได้อีกเนี่ย ไม่รู้จะว่าถ้าจะขึ้นเครื่องคราวนี้จะเอาอะไรขึ้นได้ด้วยมั่ง ไม่รู้ iPod หรือว่า MP3 จะโดนตรวจ check ละเอียดอีกหรือเปล่า พวกสื่อบ้านเรายิ่งชอบตีข่าวเกินจริงอยู่ด้วย ไม่รู้จะเชื่อใครดี (ตอนก่อนจะกลับมาก็มีเรื่องทีนึง ... ว่าจะเอาอะไรขึ้นเครื่องได้มั่งเนี่ย สายการบินบ้านเราบอกว่า ต้องทิ้งคอมพิวเตอร์ไว้เลย ห้ามเอาขึ้นเด็ดขาด ... โห แบบนั้นก็เกินจริงสุดๆ)

อ่าน discussion ใน slashdot ด้วยนะครับ .... สนุกดี แต่ว่าสยองสุดๆ กับการที่คนมี power บางทีก็ใช้มันแบบ unlawful และทำอะไรเกินเลย...

Nothing Improves Without Change

I just came to realization. I post in my earlier blog entry, with a link to Mac 360 degree.

Tera Jean Patricks of Mac 360 degree had gone.

The title of this post is a quote from that page. A message she left to one of her colleagues.

Recently, I also had a bad news that the son of my close friends had gone, too (linked in Thai, registration required).

All the best to those who had gone. All the best to those who still with me on this earth. The space and time are for sharing, living together, laughters, in harmony. One day passed, many of us will not be around. Who knows who will be the next.

Memories will be left behind. Regret will occur in hearts of those who had not done the best to the others.

We all share the same fate.

No Apple Keynote at Paris

No one knows the actual reason why. Nevertheless there are speculations. Pick one you like.

For me, I don't like conspiracy theory. But, ..., well, WWDC keynote was less-than-stellar. There were wide suggestion that either Steve Jobs wasn't in the healthy condition (which turned out not to be true. But do we really know the actuality of this?) ... or a bigger problem loom ahead and occupying Jobs and Apple's time enough not to deliver the keynote at Paris.

If you like to know what I am talking about, you can find it in many places. Mac 360 degree has an article about this and I think it worth a read. There's more about this somewhere else that has better coverage about the situation with Wall Streets too, but I forgot where and I didn't keep the link.

Pick whatever the theory you like; but there's just one fact: No Apple Paris Keynote.

After WWDC

Back from WWDC a while ago, but have no time to write any entry. I made a podcast about it a bit after Steve's keynote (not breaking NDA), though. You can still find it at www.dualgeek.com. I will post a short bit about what I think of Leopard here though.

While people seem to disappoint from what they saw/heard from the keynote, remember that it was the developer's conference. While I generally agree with most developers there that stationary and ichat aren't tools for developer and why then should it be in the keynote, we have to make note that Steve had to wow other people too. Also, both applications provided a bit of what we might be able to incorporate into our apps via the new APIs or new development core frameworks.

Leopard will be HUGE for developers. Several core frameworks will improve greatly. New Xcode/Interface Builder seems much better. Application development will be much easier, including software/code profiling. New frameworks such as Core Animation will post a huge possibility to what we can do to provide the fluid interface and user experience. New additional 'Kits' are nice too. There is a project I once tried to do, and had setup a timeframe of several weeks, or months. I could have the app done in matter of an hour now.

End-users might not find anything change big, since it now seems to me like most change will be in the underlying infrastructure. For example, Spotlight had been rewritten and it is now really really fast and stable (despite the general instability of the developer preview build of the OS). It would be like an Iceberg where easily visible changes is roughly about just 1/10.

The rumor about ZFS being the file system of Leopard is becoming even more interesting with the introduction of Time Machine. Don't know if it will really come true though.

Now, about my WWDC-expectation.

I had a home-run hit about Mac Pro sporting Xeon-class processors. Also correct about Xserve and Leopard Developer Preview (who wouldn't have thought of this anyway?). I missed entirely about the iPod and pro applications. Half correct about the Macbook Pro. Well, because while I think we might see the update, it won't appear during the WWDC (see my previous post).

WWDC Expectations

Probably one of my final blog entries before I leave for WWDC (Even it's the first entry I write in a month). It's kinda tradition to post my expectation before an Apple's big event. This time is no exception, since above all WWDC is the event I excite about the most. So without any more fanfares, here goes my list:

Mac Pro. A pro-class (workstation-class) desktop machine replacement for PowerMac G5. Many expected Core 2 Duo in it, but I would rather hope for the Xeon-class CPUs.
Mac OS X 10.5 Developer Preview. Almost a certainty. Would it be WWDC without this? New features will be announced and previewed, with a high hope on an entirely new Finder. Release date announcement also expected (later this year?).
A few updates to Pro-lines applications.
Something involving iPod, probably new updates and improvement on services. The iPod nano haven't been touched since its debut. 5G is old and need new light to shade on. Movies store finally or eminent?
MacBook Pro update. I want to see this happen. Well, I want to get my own MBP. However, with the recent announcement of cool (in both sense) new Intel chips, the Core 2-series, I really want to hold my decision and wait until the MBP line is updated with the new chips first. It'd been more than half-a-year since the 15" made its debut in Jan anyway. However, as this would steal the light and thunder from Mac Pro, maybe Macworld Paris later will be more likely the stage for the MacBook Pro update.
Xserves. I don't know what they will name this one. MacServes? Well, that sucks. However, as Steve mentioned that he wants "Mac" in the name of the products, we can never know. I hope they come up with a better name. Yeah, Xserves update to the new Intel-chips could be there too.
New Cinema Displays to go with the Mac Pro.

Tixe framework - Cocoa Bindings for WebKit

Anyone who has been playing with Cocoa Bindings knows its power. Cocoa Bindings can make a lot of complicate model-view bindings much simpler by providing a generic mechanism via Key-Value coding (KVO) utilization.

I demonstrated Cocoa Bindings with a simple NSTableView in my previous Cocoa Bootcamp: Basic Cocoa developer training during the past weekend. It simplified the complexity of the code dramatically. An application that would require an hour to code could be done in a matter of minutes, saved many many trivial (but nevertheless long and error-prone) lines of code.

And I just found Tixe framework, a 3rd-party framework entitling Cocoa Bindings for WebKit. We all know what a WebKit is, and in the training I even showed how to make a minimalist, bare-bone but functioning web-browser with zero line of code.

The features listed in the website (from what I can extracted from a long paragraph) are interesting. DOM-tree supports, CSS, JavaScript bindings, etc.

Probably the best is: It's becoming a standard part of WebKit. Therefore, it should be available with WebKit implementation from now on.

I'm giving this one a try, when I have some free time to spare.

โดยรวมแล้วดีนะ คนที่มาเรียนส่วนมากเป็นคนที่สนใจจริงๆ และหลายคนก็รู้จักกันผ่าน online community มาก่อนแล้ว บรรยากาศเป็นกันเองดี สอนสนุก แต่ว่าแน่นอนว่าบางทีก็มีส่วนที่มัน rough บ้าง (เพราะว่าจะว่าไป ผมก็ไม่เคยสอนเขียน Cocoa จริงๆ จังๆ แบบนี้ซักที เคยแต่สอนแบบแนะๆ ตัวต่อตัว)

มีคนที่ไปอบรม (คุณ Isriya Paireepairit) เขียน blog ถึง ด้วย (+ มีรูปอยู่รูปนึง ... ถ้าอยากดูรูปมากกว่านี้ก็รบกวนเชิญที่ Freemac.net)

สำหรับ Advanced Cocoa จะเน้นเรื่องพวก framework ที่ทำให้เขียน application ได้ในระดับสูงกว่านีี้ ก็จะมี Core Image และ Core Data นอกจากนั้นอาจจะมีเรื่องของการเชื่อมกับ Spotlight และการทำให้ application ตัวเองมัน script ได้จาก AppleScript นะ ... ก็ยังไม่แน่ใจว่าจะยัดเยียดเนื้อหาลงใน 2 วันได้แค่ไหน เพราะว่ามันก็มีเรื่อง trade-off พอสมควร (จะเอา broad หรือว่าเอา depth และมีเวลาอยู่กับแต่ละเรื่องนานๆ ล่ะ)

ถ้าถาม id คงจะบอกให้โชว์ GNUstep ด้วยมั้ง ;-)

Forensic Science Day 1

วันนี้สอนนิติวิทยาศาสตร์วันแรก สนุกดี เป็นคลาสกับกลุ่มคนที่รู้สึกว่าสอนแล้วสนุก หรือว่าตัวเราเองคงต้องได้ทำการบ้านเยอะแน่ๆ เป็นครั้งแรกตั้งแต่กลับมาจากญี่ปุ่น

นักศึกษาก็มากันหลายพื้นเพ หลาย background แบบนี้ท่าทางจะสนุกจริงๆ น่ะแหละ แค่วันนี้ยังไม่เข้าเนื้อหาจริงๆ แค่ intro เรื่องบางเรื่องแล้วก็ลองให้จับกลุ่ม discuss กัน ก็สนุกแล้ว ได้ idea อะไรหลายอย่างมากขึ้นเยอะ หลายเรื่องหลายมุมมองเราก็ไม่เคยคิดเลย (ก็มันไม่รู้นี่หว่า ไม่มีใครบอก) ก็ได้แนวคิดเยอะแยะ เสริมความคิดเรื่องการคิดโปรเจคให้มาเข้ากับหลักสูตรนี้ได้เยอะเลย

สรุป สนุก

เสียดาย อาทิตย์หน้าไม่ได้สอน เพราะว่าติดสอน Cocoa (การพัฒนาโปรแกรมบน Mac; ดูรายละเอียดที่ Thai Mac Dev) ก็ต้องให้ อ.สุนีย์ สอนแทนไป เรื่อง Database & Information system ก็เป็นเรื่องที่พี่เค้าอยากจะสอนที่ภาคอยู่แล้วมั้ง แต่ว่าไม่ได้สอนซะที

ยังคิดไม่ออกเลย ว่าครั้งต่อไปจะสอนเรื่องอะไรดี ยังไงรบกวนนักศึกษาวิชานี้ ถ้าได้อ่านนี่ ยังไงก็ลองแนะนำกันมาที่ mail นะครับ (ตอนนี้ผมกำลังคิดว่าคงจะเริ่มพูดถึง Digital content creation กับ management ก่อน จะได้ลามไปถึงพวก Pattern classification & recognition ได้ต่อ)

ดูผ่านไป 2 แมทช์ เห็นที่เค้าว่ากันว่าเป็นเต็งสองกับเต็งสามไปแล้ว

บอกไว้ก่อนว่าผมไม่วิจารณ์แบบเซียนข้างสนามนะ ขอพูดถึงในฐานะคนที่ดูให้สนุกมากกว่า

ผิดหวังแฮะ เยอรมันเกมรับมีปัญหาแน่ๆ ชัวร์ ขนาดเจอกับคอสตาริกานะ ยังเจอปัญหาขนาดนี้ ส่วนเกมรุกยังไม่อยากบอกอะไรมาก จะว่าเจ๋งก็เจ๋ง แต่ว่าเจอคอสตาริกาบอกอะไรไม่ได้มากหรอก รอให้เจอที่แข็งกว่านี้ก่อนค่อยว่ากัน ... แต่ว่าเกมรับนะ ถ้าเจอแบบบราซิล หรือว่าอาร์เจนตินา อาจจะเละได้ง่ายๆ แต่ว่าสรุปว่าเยอรมันเล่นสนุกดี เป็นนัดเปิดสนามที่ดูสนุกที่สุดที่เคยดูมา (ตั้งแต่ปี 90, ปี 86 นี่ไม่ได้ดูนัดเปิด แต่ว่าถึงดูก็คงไม่ได้ซึ้งอะไรกับมันมาก เพราะว่าปีนั้นนอกจาก มาราโดน่าเจ๋ง แล้วก็ดูอะไรไม่ค่อยรู้เรื่องหรอก)

อังกฤษนี่น่าผิดหวังกว่าเยอะ เล่นชนะแบบน่าแพ้ ครึ่งแรกจริงๆ ก็เล่นสูสีกัน แต่ว่าครึ่งหลังนี่พวกเล่นหาบอลกันไม่เจอเลย ทำเกมสู้ไม่ได้ ปรากวัยเล่นไม่มีความเฉียบขาดเอง กองกลางที่หลายคนชมว่าระดับโลก นี่กลายเป็นทำอะไรไม่ได้เลย ดีนะตอนปลายๆ มีแลมพาร์ดที่พอจะโผล่มายิงแถวสองให้ได้ลุ้นบ้าง นอกนั้น ... หาย ถ้าจะมองโลกในแง่ดีก็คงจะบอกว่า ยังไม่มีความฟิตพอมั้ง แต่ว่ามันก็ไม่น่าจะเป็นแบบนั้นหรอก คงจะบ้างแบบนี้มากไม่ได้

เดี๋ยวคงนั่งทำงานซักพัก ถ้าไหวคงได้เห็นอาร์เจนตินา ตัวเต็งเมื่อคราวก่อน เล่นน่ะแหละ แต่ว่าคราวนี้ไม่ได้เป็นตัวเต็งแบบทุกๆ ครั้งนะ ไม่แน่อาจจะเล่นดีก็ได้

ที่แน่ๆ คงจะต้องรอดูหลายทีมเล่นน่ะแหละ ก็ยังไม่เห็นบราซิล ฝรั่งเศส โปรตุเกส เชค ฯลฯ เล่นเลย

ยังไงๆ .. สรุปผมเชียร์ญี่ปุ่น

นั่งทำงานไป ดูสวีเดน กับ ตรินิแดด & โทเบโก ไป ... ไปๆ มาๆ ก็มานั่งลุ้นอย่างเดียว งานเงินไม่ทำมันล่ะ เพราะว่าคู่นี้ลุ้นมากๆ ดูตอนแรกๆ เหมือนกับสวีเดนเหนือกว่าเยอ ชื่อชั้นก็ดีกว่า ตัวก็รู้จักเกือบหมด เล่นลีกดังๆ ทั้งนั้น ส่วนตรินิแดดนี่มีแต่ตัวค่อนข้างโนเนม เล่นลีกรองๆ แต่ว่าเล่นครึ่งแรกไม่ได้เป็นรองเลยแฮะ โผล่มาครึ่งหลังได้ไม่กี่วินาที ก็โดนใบแดงไล่ออกไปคนซะงั้น สวีเดนน่าจะได้เปรียบสุดๆ นั่นแหละ เลิกทำมันเลยงาน มานั่งลุ้นตรินิแดดตั้งแต่เมื่อไหร่ก็ไม่รู้ พอสุดท้ายเสมอกันนี่ ดีใจยังกะได้แชมป์โลก ลุ้นบอลรองนี่มันสนุกแบบน้ีเอง

ส่วนคู่อาร์เจนตินา ไม่ขอพูดถึง เพราะว่าเกมสูสี เล่นกันดีทั้งคู่ ดูสนุกดี อาร์เจนตินาชนะไม่ใช่เพราะเล่นดีกว่ามากมายหรอกนะ เพียงแต่ใช้โอกาสเด็ดขาดกว่าเท่านั้นเอง ส่วนรูปเกมหลายๆ อย่างไม่ได้ดีกว่าเลย สรุปว่ายังได้ลุ้นทั้งคู่น่ะแหละ

หนทางยังอีกยาว ก็ดูมันไปเรื่อยๆ แหละ (งานการอย่าเสียก็แล้วกัน)

จะบ้าตาย

ส่ง paper ไปเข้า conference 3 ชิ้น ตอนแรกเค้าให้ upload ไฟล์เป็น PDF และ source ของ paper เป็น .doc หรือ LaTeX ซึ่งโดยปกติผมมักจะใช้ LaTeX เขียนอยู่แล้วกับงานแบบนี้ ไม่ค่อยอยากจะใช้ word เขียนเอกสารที่มันเป็นวิชาการ ต้องใช้การ cross reference เยอะๆ เท่าไหร่ เพราะว่ามันลำบากพอสมควร แต่ว่า LaTeX มันจัดการให้หมด

ทีนี้ พอ paper ได้ accepted ไปแล้ว ก็มานั่งแก้เป็น camera-ready version ที่เค้าให้ upload ทั้ง PDF ทั้ง source เหมือนเดิม แต่ว่าคราวนี้ให้ upload source ได้แต่ .doc

ไอ้เราก็นั่งใบ้กินอยู่ แต่ว่าก็ทำเป็น LaTeX และ upload ที่เป็น .tex ไปเหมือนเดิม

วันนี้มีคนโทรมาถามว่า "paper ของอาจารย์ 3 paper นี่ช่วย upload source ให้ใหม่ได้มั้ยคะ" เหตุผลก็เพราะว่าอ่านด้วย word ไม่ได้ ผมก็เลยบอกไปว่า ผมไม่ได้ใช้ word เขียน ผมใช้ LaTeX ก็ได้รับคำตอบมาว่า "มีทางจะแปลงให้เป็น .doc มั้ยคะ" ...

ก็ไม่รู้จะทำไงดี

ที่บ่นคราวนี้ ไม่ใช่เรื่องความห่วยของ word หรอก (ชื่อ entry มันก็ misleading ไปหน่อย) แต่ว่าเป็นเรื่องที่ทำไมเราถึงต้องไปยึดติดกับสิ่งที่มันไม่ได้เป็นมาตรฐานขนาดนั้น ให้มาเป็นมาตรฐานด้วย ผมไม่ได้พูดเล่นนะ ต่อให้มีคนใช้ word มากแค่ไหน มันก็ไม่เป็นมาตรฐานอยู่ดี เพราะว่ามันต่างกันเกินไปในแต่ละ version เอางี้ละกันว่า .doc ของ word97 ไปอ่านใน word2000 ก็มีปัญหาเรื่อง format และอิื่นๆ อีกเยอะ

ทำไมเราไม่ให้ choice เรื่องนี้วะ อย่างน้อยๆ เรื่องบทความวิชาการ ต่างประเทศเค้าก็ accept LaTeX กันเป็นปกติ บทความส่วนมากก็ไม่ได้ใช้ word เขียนกัน จะรับ .doc ของ word ผมไม่ว่าอะไรหรอกนะ แต่ว่าอย่างน้อยๆ ก็น่าจะรับ LaTeX ด้วย

เทอมหน้าได้สอนน้อยลงไปตัวนึงแล้ว!

ตอนแรกต้องสอน computer graphics ปริญญาโทด้วย แต่ว่าเนื่องจากคนลงน้อยเกินไป (ณ เวลาปัจจุบัน) ก็เลยต้องปิดมันไปด้วยเหตุผลว่าไม่คุ้มค่าใช้จ่าย (ที่เราก็ไม่รู้ว่ามันมีอะไรมั่ง หรือว่าต้องลงกี่คนถึงจะคุ้ม หรือว่าไอ้คุ้มไม่คุ้มนี่มันคิดยังไง ในกรณีนี้)

ทำให้เทอมหน้าเหลือแค่ computer graphics (ป.ตรี), user interfaces, unix system admin, techniques in game development (ICT), IT สำหรับ forensic science, แล้วก็ประสานงานวิชา seminar ของป.โท IT

ซึ่งมันก็เยอะอยู่เหมือนกัน แต่ว่าไม่เป็นไร อย่างน้อยก็น้อยลงไปวิชานึง

ยังต้อง สอน/อบรม cocoa อีก

อ่าน blog ตัวเองเมื่อวันก่อน (เรื่อง X-Men) ตอนท้ายๆ ที่เขียนถึงเรื่อง Phoenix แล้วนึกถึงเพลง Vincent ของ Don McLean ที่เขียนถึงจิตรกร Vincent van Gogh และภาพวาด Starry Night

เป็นเพลงที่ชอบมากที่สุดเพลงนึงนะ วันไหนที่อารมณ์อ่อนไหวนี่ บางทีฟังแล้วจะร้องไห้เลยก็มี

ไม่ได้เขียน review หรือว่าวิเคราะห์วิจารณ์หนังนานแล้ว แต่ว่าเรื่องนี้อดไม่ได้จริงๆ เพราะว่ามันตีความสวยๆ ได้เยอะเลย ตั้งแต่เริ่มภาคแรกน่ะแหละ อีกอย่าง บอกไว้ก่อนว่าผมไม่ได้สนใจความ "เหมือน" ในเนื้อเรื่องระหว่างหนังกับการ์ตูน หรือว่าการเพิ่ม/ลด/เปลี่ยนบทบาทตัวละครบางตัวนะ

ผมอยากจะมองในแง่การตีความเชิงปรัชญากับชีวิตมากกว่า

ผมอยากจะมองแค่ว่า ถ้าบรรดา X-Men หรือว่าพวกมนุษย์กลายพันธุ์ เป็นคนธรรมดาที่แตกต่างไปจากคนทั่วๆ ไป คนที่ไม่ใช่ mainstream คนที่คิดแตกต่าง ทำแตกต่าง มีแนวคิดและความสามารถที่แตกต่างออกไปจากคนทั่วไปล่ะ .... สิ่งที่คนพวกนี้พบจากสังคมก็มักจะเป็นสิ่งเดียวกันน่ะแหละ คือ ความกลัว ที่มักจะแฝงอยู่ในรูปของความโน่นความนี่

หลายคนอาจจะมองคนที่แตกต่างเหล่านี้ ว่าเป็นผู้มีปัญหาทางจิต มีปัญหาในการเข้าสังคม มีปัญหาเพราะว่าไม่เหมือนคนหมู่มาก ฯลฯ และพยายามแก้ ด้วยการบังคับ (โดยการใช้กฏของสังคม) ให้พวกที่แตกต่างเหล่านี้เป็นไปตามคนหมู่มาก อ้างโน่นอ้างนี่ และสุดท้ายก็อ้างประชาธิปไตย (เหมือนในหนัง X-3 น่ะแหละ ที่มีการเอาตรงนี้มาแดกดันเล่นด้วย) .... แต่ว่าคนทั่วไปมันเข้าใจประชาธิปไตยซะที่ไหนเล่า ว่ามันต่างจากพวกมากลากไปตรงไหน

ผมมองว่าบรรดามนุษย์กลายพันธุ์ทั้งหลายนี่ เป็น exaggerated version ของคนธรรมดาๆ ที่มีความสามารถพิเศษอะไรบางอย่างน่ะแหละ ลองแทนความสามารถทางร่างกายด้วยคำว่า จิตใจ สิ เช่น คนที่มีใจแบบความสามารถของ Wolverine ก็เป็นพวกใจแข็งเป็นเหล็ก กล้าหักกล้าทะลวงกล้าแหก รักษาอาการบาดเจ็บทางจิตใจ (อาการท้อแท้ ฯลฯ) ได้เร็ว .. คนที่มีใจแบบ Iceman ก็เป็นพวกที่ทำให้ทุกคนใจเย็นลงได้ หรือว่าเย็นใจได้เมื่ออยู่ใกล้ๆ ผมว่าจริงๆ ลองแปลๆ ตีความเล่นๆ แบบนี้ก็เข้าท่าดีเหมือนกัน

ที่ผมชอบที่สุด (แต่ว่าหลายคนอาจจะไม่ชอบไปด้วย) ในเรื่อง X-3 ก็คือ Angel ที่หลายคนบอกว่า ไม่เห็นมีบทอะไรเลย ออกมาเท่ห์แค่ไม่กี่ฉาก พลังพิเศษอะไรก็ไม่มี นอกจากบินได้

แต่ว่า Angel เป็นสัญลักษณ์ของคำว่า อิสรภาพ ซึ่งอาจหมายถึงคนที่มีใจรักอิสะเสรีด้วย คนธรรมดาๆ คนหนึ่งที่ไม่มีอะไรพิเศษนี่แหละ คนพวกนี้เป็นคนที่น่าสงสารที่สุดในสังคมที่พวกเราๆ สร้างมันขึ้นมา ผมเชื่อว่า คนเราทุกคน เกิดมาพร้อมกับสิ่งๆ หนึ่งที่ถูกเด็ดทิ้งไปโดยระบบโลกที่พวกเราสร้างมันขึ้นมาเอง ... นั่นก็คือ ปีกแห่งเสรีภาพ (Wings of Freedom)

ใน X-3 ภาพของ Angel จะเป็นการโบยบินบนท้องฟ้า ซึ่งแต่ไหนแต่ไรมา เราใช้แทนสัญลักษณ์ของการมีอิสรภาพ และ Angel ก็คือคนที่จะถูก รักษา เป็นคนแรกของเรื่อง นั่นก็คือ การเด็ดปีก หรือทำลายเสรีภาพทิ้งนั่นเอง

คนที่มีลักษณะพิเศษหลายอย่าง ที่ถูกระบบของโลกเรา อ้างความเป็นคนหมู่มาก อ้างความเหมือนความเท่าเทียม ไม่ให้ความสำคัญหรือแม้แต่ยอมรับความต่าง ... ทำลายลงไป ... คนที่บทจะดีก็ดีใจหาย บทจะร้ายก็ร้ายน่ากลัว มีพลังมหาศาลที่สามารถเอาไปใช้สร้างสรรค์ทุกอย่างได้ หรือว่าจะทำลายอะไรก็ได้ อย่าง Phoenix ... ก็มีหลายคนในความเป็นจริง แต่ว่าน่าเสียดายที่คนพวกนี้หลายคนต้องจบชีวิตตัวเอง หรือไม่ก็ดำเนินชีวิตไปในทางเลวร้ายทำลายล้าง เพราะว่าเมื่อทำดี หรือพยายามทำดี แล้วต้องอยู่ภายใต้กรอบมากไป เหมือนกับถูกกักขัง และไม่ได้รับการยอมรับในความสามารถตัวเองอย่างแท้จริง .. หรือว่าคนที่เป็นอย่างมนุษย์กลายคนพันธุ์คนอื่นๆ

ผมไม่ค่อยเชื่อหรอก ที่มีคนบอกว่า ความต้องการพื้นฐานทางจิตใจของคนเรา คือ ความรัก ผมว่ามันคือ การยอมรับ ในทางที่ตัวเองเป็น และการยอมรับและยินดี ในสิ่งที่ตัวเองทำ จากความปรารถนาและเจตนาที่ดีอย่างจริงใจ ต่างหากล่ะ

อยากจะ quote อะไรบางอย่างจากหนังแฮะ แต่ว่าไม่รู้จะ quote อะไรดี ก็เอานี่ละกัน

อ่านชื่อข้างบนก็คงจะรู้ๆ กัน ว่า entry นี้จะเขียนเรื่องอะไร

ไม่เข้าใจว่าทำไม word มันเป็น standard format ในเอกสารราชการมันซะหมดเลยฟะ ขนาด course description/syllabus ยังบังคับให้ใช้ .doc เลย น่าเบื่อจริงๆ จะเขียน thesis หรือว่าเขียนโน่นเขียนนี่ใน LaTeX นี่ รู้สึกเหมือนไม่ได้รับการยอมรับ (ทั้งๆ ที่มันออกมาสวยกว่า มีระเบียบกว่า คนทำปวดหัวน้อยกว่า แต่ว่าเสียเวลากับ learning curve หน่อย)

เรื่องนั้นช่างมันเถอะ เอาอะไรมากับ software ที่มันถูกสร้างมาเพื่อเขียนจดหมาย แต่ว่าถูกเอามาใช้งานผิดประเภท จนเรื้อรังถึงทุกวันนี้

วันนี้อยากจะบ่นอีกเรื่อง ก็เลขาภาคฯ ให้ส่ง course syllabus วิชา SE2 ไปให้เป็น .doc (ปกติผมจะส่งเป็น PDF ใช้ LaTeX ทำ) ก็ไม่มีปัญหาอะไร เราก็มี MS Word 2004 for Mac อยู่ ก็เขียนๆ ไป

พอเอาไปเปิดกับเครื่องเลขาภาคฯ ดันเปิดไม่ได้แฮะ เกิดปัญหาอะไรก็ไม่รู้ word มันดัน crash เฉยเลย... ลองกี่ครั้ง เซฟอีท่าไหน ก็เหมือนกันหมด

ไม่รู้จะแก้ยังไง ลองเอา OpenOffice.org ที่มีในเครื่อง Mac เนี่ยแหละ เปิดไอ้เจ้า file .doc นั่นใหม่ แล้วก็ save as ใหม่เป็น word format เหมือนเดิม .... คราวนี้ดันเปิดได้แฮะ

แบบนี้ไม่รู้ว่าจะเรียกว่าไงดี ... แต่ว่าสรุปว่า OO.org เจ๋ง ไม่มีในเครื่องนะ คงจะใบ้รับประทานไปแล้ว (คงต้องไปนั่งเขียนใหม่ในเครื่องที่มันเป็น Windows)

วันนี้อ่าน TUAW เล่นเหมือนปกติ เจออะไรน่ารักๆ ก็เลยเอามาเล่าสู่กันฟัง

พอดีเร็วๆ นี้ Apple เปิด Apple Store ใหม่ ที่ 5th Avenue, NYC (อเมริกา) แล้วก็มีการโปรโมทกันเต็มที่ อย่างหนึ่งที่ผมชอบมาก ก็คือการถ่ายรูปทุกชั่วโมง แล้วก็เอาขึ้นต่อๆ กัน (time lapse photo) ตอนนี้ก็ยังดูได้ที่

Downward Spiral

[I write this entry in English on purpose]

I have a strange feeling recently. I think I know why, but I don't know what should I do to make it better: I just feel so down.

It's like spiral downward some endless hole. Well, Alice, I used to want to know how deep the rabbit's hole goes. Not this time though, I don't want to go there now. I know there might not be a way back for me.

I had a great weekend. I and my friend did our usual podcasting business at Hua Hin beach, had a little party with his friends. The best thing is when we discussed our professional sides, our thoughts, our insights and ideas, and above all our passions. We are more similar than both of us thought.

It was really fun talking about Information Visualization and Information Aesthetics, basic Architectural Designs, User Interface and Usability, Forms and Functions, Archaeology and History and Information Management. We both think it would be nice to have a place to share those information and enough information for making more senses out of things (correlations, etc).

Information Visualization and Aesthetics is what we really discussed throughout. Someday we may have a chance to work on some real business together on this, not a hobby like our podcast.

When I came back from Hua Hin, I was invited to join a dinner with a group of Japanese Medical Professors. At first I thought only one of them will come, and he comes to discuss about some topics that might or might not get my interest.

One of them is doing Medical Informatics. Basically we talked and talked about Teleconferencing technology and basic research network infrastructure (TEIN2 and JGN2) and their impact and medical studies. Then we moved onto the topics as broad as e-Learning and Disease management. We agreed on several topics and exchanged lots and lots of insights.

That, too, was very fun.

I came back to my department Monday afternoon. I started to feel so down like never before. The atmosphere, people, things, rules, etc etc and etc. Not a single thing seems right and not a single thing made me want to work. Not a single thing keep my head up high, and further down goes my feeling.

Monday passed and gone. Tuesday came.

I gave the final exam to my student in the morning. Leon Chen called me about our Cocoa developer training and we agreed to have a discussion on this coming Saturday. These things energized me a bit.

Then we moved onto have a meeting with the Faculty of Archaeology about our plan to open the Archaeological Science degree together. I had a good discussion with Prof. Supachai on the van along to the way to our Talingchan Campus about e-Learning and Computer Technology in Chemical Training.

Well, the discussion with the Faculty of Archaeology itself was great. I had a good time discussing some of my future projects (I want to start them ASAP, though). We talked about Culture Resource Management and some other things the information system could serve.

I came back to the department, felt gloomy again.

Wednesday.

I have a meeting today at Exbiz, a consulting company and software house I'd been dealing a lot with recently. They are really nice people. We discussed a lot about project directions and exchanged a lot of visions. We agreed to work more together. I told them I am starting my own company. They were quite happy and promise to be my first business partner. Things went well, I was happy.

I am sitting at a coffee shop right now, fearing that my another return to my department will make me feel down again. Maybe I should not go back there today but go straight back home, listen to some nice music, watch some movies, read some good books, write some pretty codes.....

..............

Maybe I should believe someone who just told me yesterday:

"If going out and working with people outside made you feel so gloom, then why don't you just staying here and see things closer to you?"

Yes ... maybe I should remember it and give it a try.

ก็ยังพยายามหา engine สำหรับ Content Management System (CMS) ง่ายๆ ต่อไป ได้ยินชื่อ Drupal มานานแล้ว แต่ว่ายังไม่ได้ลองใช้ซักที วันนี้ว่างๆ ก็เลยหางานให้ตัวเองทำ

ลง Drupal ง่ายกว่าที่คิดแฮะ ไม่มีอะไรหวือหวาอย่างที่คิด ตอนแรกคิดว่าจะต้องทำอะไรที่มันคล้ายๆ กับ configure-make-make install sequence แต่ว่าจริงๆ แล้วแค่กระจายไฟล์ให้มันได้ drupal-4.x.x ออกมา แล้วย้ายมันไปลงในที่อยู่ของ Apache (ก็คือ /Library/WebServer/Documents) เท่านั้นเอง

ง่ายดีแฮะ.... ไม่มีงานทำเล่นเลย

จากนั้นก็ไป enable PHP ซะ ซึ่งอันนี้เราไม่ต้องทำเพิ่ม เพราะว่าทำไว้แล้ว แต่ว่าถ้ายังไม่ทำ ก็ไม่ยาก หาอ่านได้ทั่วไป .... (search หน่อยนะ) หลักๆ ก็ไปแก้ใน /etc/httpd/httpd.conf ค้นๆ หาพวก php แล้วก็ uncomment มันออกไปซะ แล้วก็ restart Apache ใหม่

ลองสร้างไฟล์ test.php ขึ้นมา ไม่ต้องมีอะไรมาก มีแค่ <?php phpinfo(); ?> ก็พอ โยนๆ มันลงไปใน ~/Sites แล้วก็ลองเรียกดูซิว่ามันทำงานได้ป่าว

จากนั้นก็จัดการเรื่อง database ...พอดีไม่ได้ใช้ PostgreSQL ก็เลยลองแต่ MySQL อันนี้ไม่มีอะไรมากเลย ก็แค่

mysqladmin -u root -p create drupal
mysql -u root -p drupal < /Library/WebServer/Documents/drupal/database/database.4.1.mysql

ลืมไป .. ถ้ายังไม่ได้ลง MySQL ก็หามาลงก่อนนะ ลงไม่ยากหรอก :-)

พอได้แล้วก็เข้าไปแก้ใน /Library/WebServer/Documents/drupal/sites/defaults/settings.php ค้นๆ หา $db_url แล้วก็แก้ๆ ให้มันเข้าท่า


$db_url = "mysql://root:your_password@localhost/drupal";

จากนั้นก็แก้ $base_url ในไฟล์เดียวกันน่ะแหละ


$base_url = "http://localhost/drupal";

สุดท้ายไปเพิ่มไอ้นี่ให้ crontab

   0    *   *   *   *   wget -O - -q http://localhost/drupal/cron.php

จากนั้นก็เรียบร้อย :-) ใช้งานได้แล้ว เดี๋ยวไว้ค่อยหา theme กับ module มาลง วันนี้พอล่ะ ขี้เกียจ :-)

ใช้ Gruff ทำกราฟใน Rails

อยู่ดีๆ เกิดอยากจะลองทำกราฟเล่นกับ ruby on rails ซักหน่อย เพราะว่าคงจะมีเริ่มมีงานที่ต้องใช้งานกราฟสวยๆ อยู่บ้าง (แต่ว่าหลายงานยังหา hosting ไม่ได้เลยแฮะ)

จำได้ตะหงิดๆ ว่าเคยเล่น gruff (หรือว่าอะไรทำนองนี้) อยู่ซักพัก เลยไป search หาใน code playground (ที่ลอง idea ใน harddisk ตัวเองนี่แหละ ตั้งชื่อไปงั้น) สรุปว่าเป็น gruff จริงๆ ด้วย

แต่ว่า.... ฮา ต้องลงโน่นนี่ใหม่เยอะเลย เพราะว่าตั้งแต่ล้างเครื่องใหม่นี่ไม่ค่อยได้ลงพวก lib ที่เคยๆ ใช้ไปเลย

ก็ต้องไล่ลง ตั้งแต่ libpng, libjpeg, freetype, ghostscript ฯลฯ โน่นเลย ตรงนี้ Fink ก็พอจะช่วยได้บ้าง แต่ว่าถ้าเป็นพวก lib นี่เอา source มา compile ลงเองดีกว่า ไม่ค่อยเชื่อใจ Fink เท่าไหร่ แล้วก็ต้องลง ImageMagick อีก (ไม่เคยลองกับ GraphcisMagick) แล้วก็ลง RMagick ที่เป็นตัว binding ของ ImageMagick ของ Ruby อีกตัว

จากนั้นค่อยลง gruff .... ตรงนี้ก็ gem install ลงธรรมดาๆ ไม่มีอะไรหวือหวา

อืมมม ใช้งานใน Rails ก็ง่ายดีอ่ะ ตรงไปตรงมา ดู ตัวอย่างใน web NoR ก็ได้ เคลียร์ดี

Mac OS X 10.4.6 Review

Maybe it's a little late to review this, but I wanted to give it a few real usage tests before posting any comment on it.

I had previously give some bad reviews about recent OS X updates, especially to the 10.4.4 widgets update. All I can say about 10.4.6 is: it finally made Tiger stable, much more than any of the previous Tiger-moment, and enough for most serious tasks.

I had problems with stability of 10.4.x since x=0. Finally, I can call Mac OS X stable and rock solid again.

Your mileage may vary, though.

ZFS for OS X?

มีข่าวออกมาว่า Apple (หรือว่าอย่างน้อยๆ ก็ engineer คนหนึ่งล่ะ) ให้ความสนใจกับการ port ZFS (Zettabyte File System) ให้ใช้งานได้กับ Mac OS X หรือว่าอาจจะเป็น file system ต่อไปเลย

[ข่าวดั้งเดิม (mailing list ของ Open Solaris), สนทนาภาษา slashdot, ส่วนนี่ของ osnews]

อืมมมมมม ก็ไม่เลวหรอก โดยส่วนตัวผมก็ไม่ค่อยชอบ HFS+ เท่าไหร่ ... แต่ว่าโปรแกรมบน Mac หลายตัวที่เคยชินกับการระบบไฟล์ที่เป็น case-insensitive (เช่นโปรแกรมจากบางบริษัท ที่ file system ของ OS ตัวเองเป็นแบบนั้นอยู่แล้ว; ทำให้ทำงานกับระบบไฟล์ที่เป็น case-sensitive เช่น UFS ไม่ได้)

ZFS น่าสนใจดี โดยเฉพาะกับ harddisk ใหญ่ๆ แล้วก็มีเรื่องของการ integration ระหว่าง file system กับ volume management แล้วก็เรื่องของ storage pool management ด้วย ยังมีอีกเยอะ แต่ว่าอ่านรายละเอียดจาก wikipedia เอาเองก็แล้วกัน

แต่ว่า... ไหนๆ จะเปลี่ยนทั้งที ไม่ลองเหลียวแล Solaris kernel ดูมั่งเหรอ? Solaris ก็ open source แล้วทั้งที (OpenSolaris คือชื่อจริงๆ ตอนนี้ ส่วน Solaris 10 หรือว่า Solaris Express หรือว่าอะไรก็ตาม รวมถึง Nexenta GNU/Solaris ด้วย ก็เป็นแค่ distribution หนึ่งของ OpenSolaris เท่านั้น)

Solaris kernel, *Better* file system (อะไรก็ได้ที่ดีกว่าตอนนี้... ZFS ก็ได้ ไม่ชอบ HFS+), Aqua Interface, Cocoa Framework, OS X features ..... สวรรค์ชัดๆ

WS-* เป็นชื่อย่อของ "กลุ่ม" ของข้อกำหนดมาตรฐาน (standard) ของ Web Services ที่นับวันมันชักจะเยอะขึ้นทุกทีๆ และเข้าใจยากขึ้นเรื่อยๆ และที่สำคัญ... ท่าทางจะ relevant น้อยลงเรื่อยๆ กับอะไรหลายๆ อย่าง สำหรับคนที่ต้องทำงานกับมาตรฐานพวกนี้ ฝันร้ายชัดๆ

ในที่สุดก็เห็นนิตยสาร/วารสาร/สื่อ (หรือว่าอะไรก็ช่าง) ใช้คำว่า Hacker ถูกต้องซะที

เบื่อแล้ว เอะอะก็ "Hacker เจาะระบบๆๆๆ แต่ว่าไม่ได้เจาะเพื่อทำลายล้าง" อะไรทำนองนั้น ทั้งๆ ที่จริงๆ แล้ว Hacker นี่ทำเป็นอย่างเดียวคือ "Make Cool Things" ใน creative sense ด้วย

พอดีไปเจอมาจาก Loud Thinking blog ของ David Heinemeier Hansson (DHH) คนที่สร้าง Ruby on Rails ที่เป็น The Coolest Thing (IMO) ตอนนี้ ..... เป็นรูปจากวารสาร Wired เขียนถึง DHH ว่า The Hottest Hacker on Earth

DHH นี่ Hacker ของแท้จริงๆ ยอมรับเลย RoR เป็น framework ที่สวยมากๆ และช่วยทุ่นเวลางานได้เยอะเลย มีความสุขเวลาทำงานด้วยอีกตะหาก ลอง download ไฟล์เสียงที่ DHH เคยพูดถึง RoR มาฟังก็รู้สึกดี motivation ดีมาก และความคิดดีมากด้วย (แต่ว่าน่าเสียดาย จำ link ไม่ได้แล้ว คิดว่าน่าจะหา download ได้จาก RoR website น่ะแหละ)

อ่านเจอมาจาก Curt's Comments อีกล่ะ ว่า มหาวิทยาลัย Washington (ที่ St. Louis, Missouri) เปิดคอร์สสอน Ruby และ Rails ด้วย

อยากจะเปิดสอนมั่งอ่ะ ...... ไม่อยากเห็นเด็กต้องไปหัดเขียน C เป็นภาษาแรกแล้ว ทำให้เด็กสมัยนี้เขียนโปรแกรมไม่ค่อยเป็นซะเปล่าๆ แล้วก็ไม่เห็นความเกี่ยวข้องกับเรื่องรอบๆ ตัวเท่าไหร่ด้วย ที่สำคัญ มันไม่สนุก

Ruby ก็ได้ Python ก็ได้ ... อยากเปิดอ่ะ

Looking at the current TIOBE programming community index (April 2006), some of my current personal favorite/personal choice made it to the top 20; Python 8 (from 9 in 2005), Lisp/Scheme 14 (from 15), and Ruby 18 (from 32).

The top 3 are no surprising; Java, C, and C++. PHP, the current Perl of internet programming (in many senses) ranking 4th, JavaScript 9 (from 11).

Old languages are still quite popular. This is also not surprising as many many industrial works are still relying on them. SAS 11 (12), Visual Foxpro 13 (43; a big jump, wonder why), COBOL 17 (14).

Below the 20, we see lots of the Big Names: Fortran 21, Pascal 22, Prolog 29, Smalltalk 30, Bash 31, Tcl/Tk 41, ML 46, OcaML 47, Objective-C 49, Eiffel 50.

The next 50 (shown only alphabetically) contains some of my personal favorite: Haskell, Mathematica.

By the way, this is how TIOBE rank the languages (quote from tiobe.com):

The ratings are based on the world-wide availability of skilled engineers, courses and third party vendors. The popular search engines Google, MSN, and Yahoo! are used to calculate the ratings. Observe that the TPC index is not about the best programming language or the language in which most lines of code have been written.

Lighttpd and Rails 1.1

Upgraded to Rails 1.1 (via Rubygems) a bit earlier today, found a problem instantly.

I use Lighttpd embedded web server (not WEBrick that came built-in with Rails; that one works fine). I had the following message when I started the server script:

Looked inside the config/lighttpd.conf file, nothing seems wrong. Recompiled Lighttpd (the version I have; 1.4.8) doesn't work (don't really understand myself; why should I think it may work in the first place .. but anyway..).

Hmmm....

Maybe Rails 1.1 does need a newer Lighttd? That would make some sense....

Downloaded 1.4.11 (latest at the moment of writing), configure (with pcre), make, make install, done.

I'm happily on Rails again!

เกมเลี้ยงลิง

พักหลังๆ ตัวเองกับแฟน ติดเกมเลี้ยงลิง (ชื่อเต็มๆ มัน Mobile pet) บนมือถือ(ของแฟน) ก็เหมือนๆ กับทามาก๊อตน่ะแหละ คอยดูว่ามันหิว มันต้องการออกกำลังกาย อยากอาบน้ำ หรือว่าอยากให้เราเล่นด้วยหรือเปล่า คอยดู status มันไปเรื่อยๆ แล้วก็คอยเลี้ยงให้ค่าโน่นนี่มันเต็ม

แฟนลองเล่นครั้งแรก ลิงตาย เพราะว่าแฟนไม่ได้อ่าน help กับวิธีเล่น แล้วก็ใจร้อน อยากเห็นมันโตเร็วๆ เลี้ยงไปครึ่งชั่วโมง ไม่มีอะไรเปลี่ยนแปลง ก็เลยเลิกเล่น แล้วกลับมาดูหลังจากผ่านไปอาทิตย์นึง ... ลิงก็ตายไปแล้ว ประมาณว่า ไม่ตรอมใจตาย ก็หิวตาย

ก็เลยเล่นใหม่ คราวนี้ให้เราอ่าน help ให้ก่อน ก็เลยกลายเป็นธรรมเนียม ว่าตอนเช้าตื่นมาก็ต้องดู status มัน กลางวันก็ต้องดูแลมัน เย็นก็ดูแลมัน ก่อนนอนก็ดูแลมันอีก เรียกว่า status เต็มตลอดเลย

สิ่งที่สังเกตได้จากคราวนี้
1) พอเลี้ยงไปได้อาทิตย์นึง ก็เริ่มผูกพันกับมัน (พอดี graphics ในเกมมันทำน่ารักด้วย) เห็นมันทำท่าน่ารักๆ เวลาให้อาหารหรือว่าเวลาเล่นกับมันแล้วก็อารมณ์ดี
2) แฟนก็เลย เกิดอาการสงสารลิงตัวเก่า ที่เค้าเลี้ยงไม่ทันระวัง (เพราะว่าไม่รู้วิธี) แล้วก็ตายไป คิดถึงบางทีจะร้องไห้เอา (เพราะว่าเกิดอาการผูกพันกับตัวปัจจุบัน)
3) เลี้ยงไปได้ 10 วัน ลูกลิงเริ่มมีการเปลี่ยนแปลง กินอาหารท่าใหม่ เล่นซนแบบใหม่ อาบน้ำเล่นเป็ดยางสีเหลืองด้วย (ของเล่น geek ...) น่ารักมาก แถมเวลานอน เอาหางห้อยต้นไม้นอนอีก

ก็เลยตั้งใจเลี้ยงยิ่งขึ้น เพราะว่าเห็นว่าอีก 10 วัน มันต้องเปลี่ยนท่าทางอีกแน่ๆ อยากเห็นมันโตขึ้นด้วย แฟนถามประจำ ว่าเมื่อไหร่มันจะโตซะที มันอ้วนขึ้นหน่อยมั้ย ... และแล้ว อีก 10 วันก็ผ่าน

4) วันนี้ ตอนเราอยู่ใน International workshop (on Cyber Science Infrastructure) .... แฟนส่ง SMS มาบอก ว่า

"ลิงน้อยตายแล้ว ... Died happy of old age.... I really cry. He an live only 20 days. :'( "

ใจหายเหมือนกันแฮะ....

อืมมม ก็เลยมานั่งคิด ถึงพื้นฐานของจิตใจคน เราก็เล่นเกมมาเยอะเหมือนกัน แต่ว่าเพิ่งจะสังเกตจริงๆ ก็คราวนี้แหละ ว่า เวลาเราเล่นเกมบางเกม บางลักษณะ ที่เราต้องดูแลมัน ให้ความรักอะไรซักอย่างกับมัน ไม่ใช่เพื่อการเอาชนะคอมพิวเตอร์ แต่ว่าอยากให้คอมพิวเตอร์ (หรือว่าตัวละครที่เป็นคอมพิวเตอร์) มัน achieve อะไรได้บางอย่าง นี่บางทีมันสร้างความผูกพันได้เยอะเหมือนกัน มันทำให้เราอ่อนโยนขึ้นได้เหมือนกัน และบางทีมันแสดงความอ่อนไหว อ่อนแอ ในตัวเราออกมาได้เหมือนกัน (อย่างเล่น CM เงี้ย ก็คงอยากให้ตัวผู้เล่นที่เราปั้นขึ้นมาตั้งแต่เป็นตัวเยาวชน เล่นได้ดีๆ ยิงประตูได้ เปิดได้สวยๆ ทำนองนั้นมั้ง)

มี script ของหนัง The Matrix Revolution ที่ถูกแฟนหนัง extended (และแก้บางส่วน) อยู่อันนึงที่ชอบ ... จริงๆ มันก็ imply อยู่ในตัวหนังอยู่แล้ว (แต่ว่าคุณต้องดู Animatrix ด้วยนะ) .... ที่ว่า สิ่งที่ machine ต้องการที่สุด ก็คือ "Love" (ไม่ใช่แค่ "Peace" ที่อย่างในหนัง) และเมื่อมีความรักแล้ว Machine กับคน ก็อยู่ด้วยกันได้อย่างมีความสุข

นั่งเขียนอยู่เนี่ย ยังสงสารลูกลิงน้อยอยู่เลย ขนาดเกมนะ .....

อืมมมม รู้สึกว่าเราจะทำให้ภาคเดือดร้อนเรื่อยเลยแฮะ กับไอ้เรื่องที่เราอยากทำ แต่ว่ามันไม่เคยมีคนทำมาก่อนเนี่ย เลยต้องมาวางมาตรฐานโน่นนี่กันใหม่เรื่อย

ตอนก่อนโน้น (นานแล้ว) ก็เรื่องขอบัตรให้เด็กมาช่วยกันตั้งกลุ่มวิจัยทีนึงแล้ว ก็ต้องมาตั้งมาตรฐานกันวุ่นวาย คราวนี้ก็อีกล่ะ ดันไปขอเปิดวิชาเลือกตอน summer .. เค้าบอกว่าเค้าไม่เคยเปิดกัน ก็เลยต้องมาขอตั้งมาตรฐานกันอีก สุดท้ายก็ไม่ได้เปิด

แล้วข้อกำหนดบางอย่างที่คิดว่าเคยคุยกันไปแล้ว ทำไมเวลามันผ่านๆ ไป มันกลายเป็นอีกอย่างนึงหรือว่าเหมือนกับไม่เคยคุยกันเลยได้หว่า แต่ว่าไม่เป็นไรหรอก ช่างมันเถอะ

Ruby on Rails

I've been playing around with Ruby and Ruby on Rails for a while. If I could make only one comment, then ... It's a killer, really.

With the simplicity and elegantly beauty on both Ruby and Rails, along with user experience you could get from AJAX, it's the matter of time before these things become more mainstream even for the non-web-application. (I could imagine lots of desktop applications that take advantages of Web Services and Web 2.0; Apple's OS X's Sherlock is one prime example).

But with AJAX, ... yet-another-plaform-dependent-library is becoming unnecessary. After all, you can just make an application that run on your internal/local web server and design interfaces with standard web form and CSS.

It seems that I am updating this blog on really random basis (say, no basis at all). Anyway, I'm here to give you the random updates:

It's during the final exam period. So, basically, no student comes to work at the lab. It's OK, just that I feel a bit boring.
I might be getting a couple of new students (through someone else, but it's fine as long as they are joining the lab). They should be coming to this week's seminar. Too bad I can't be there for too long. Have a wedding to attend.
Feb 28 - Mar 2, I will be joining a workshop on High-Performance Computing with Mac OS X. Well, it seems that I will really have to use OS X server. Too bad that I gave up on the OS X server and installed the Workstation (Desktop) version just about 2 weeks ago. Well, as long as I could boot from my iPod, it should be fine.
I met one of my old friends from Japan (one of Thai student I talked to the most) a few days ago. I gave him some advice about his future job in Thailand. Things should be quite a bit different from what he might or might not have in mind right now.
After I decided not to teach Computation Theory next year, I decided to change my mind a bit. Well, if I still have time to talk to the head of the department about my latest decision to teach that subject (along with User Interface and Computer Graphics).
I finished writing the proposal of setting up a research center, with people from Dept. of Mathematics and Faculty of Decorative Arts. Haven't decided the final name yet, but we definitely made our formal first move.
I just finish working on our very own web server (mostly dealing instability of Linux on SPARC; we have to use one of our old^h^hwn Ultra80). So, our lab should have its own web soon.
Nothing else.

OS X 10.4.5

Released earlier today. (Apple.com)

Well, after series of frustration with OS X updates lately, I think I will not update my installation today. I would like to hear things from the community first. Call me selfish if you like, but things had upset me enough to fed me up.

Software Update tells me that the update is only 6.4MB. However, I might want to just get the Delta update from the Apple website, which weighted at 16MB just in case I have to install it later somewhere else without network connection (or with a slow one).

Check the detail of the update here.

And, after reading it really thoroughly, I feel that it's more of an update for Intel 10.4.4 than PPC 10.4.4 (someone reports that huge size difference in Software Update notification on the Intel-Mac, weighting in 40.6MB!)

Also, it doesn't really sound like yet-another-widget update :-)

ปกติเป็นคนไม่ค่อยจะให้ความสำคัญอะไรกับเรื่องพวกนี้อยูแล้ว ก็ชีวิตรู้จักแค่สองวัน .. คือ วันทำงาน กับ วันทำงาน (ไม่ได้อ่านผิดหรอก วันทำงาน กับ วันทำงาน จริงๆ)

ไม่เคยให้ความสำคัญกับวันอะไร วันเกิด วันตาย วันปีใหม่ วันปีเก่า ก็เป็นแค่วันๆ หนึ่งเท่านั้นเอง ถ้าเราไม่ได้ทำอะไรให้เป็นประโยชน์กับคนอื่นๆ เป็นประโยชน์กับสังคม หรือว่าอย่างน้อยๆ ที่สุด เป็นประโยชน์กับคนรอบข้าง วันๆ นั้นมันก็เป็นวันที่ไม่มีความหมายอะไร ไม่ว่ามันจะชื่ออะไรก็ตาม

แย่แล้ว.... แย่ตั้งนานแล้ว มันฮิตเกินไป เกินคาด เกินบรรยาย bandwidth ที่ .mac ให้กับทางคุณวีร์ (geek #1 ใน dualGeek) เต็ม! หลายคนเจอปัญหา download ไม่ได้ (อย่าว่าแต่คนอื่นเลย เรายัง download ไม่ได้เลย ตอนแรกคิดว่าเป็นที่ network ม. มันห่วยมากกว่า)

เฮ้อ ... สงสัยต้องย้ายบ้านซะแล้ว

และแล้ว ประกาศเลยก็แล้วกัน ตอนนี้ dualGeek จะมีบ้านใหม่แล้วนะครับ ชื่อ www.dualgeek.com ก็ต้องขอบคุณคุณอภิรักษ์ (Bank) เป็นอย่างมาก ที่ช่วยเป็นธุระเรื่องจด domain และจัดการ hosting ให้ ขอบคุณจริงๆ เลยเพื่อน!

แต่ว่าตอนนี้มันยังไม่มีอะไรนะ รอก่อน จะค่อยๆ update ขยับขยาย :-)

เฮ้อ... ฉลอง valentine ด้วยการค้นพบว่า เจ้าเครื่อง dell inspiron 4150 ที่ไม่ค่อยได้ใช้ (ส่วนมากให้เด็กใน lab ยืมใช้ หรือว่าตั้งทิ้งไว้เฉยๆ ไม่ได้ใช้อะไร) ... กลายเป็น "รังมด" ไปซะแล้ว

แงะเครื่องมาดู ... โอ้ มายก๊อด มีแต่มด เฮ้อ... เป็น laptop แงะมากไม่ได้ด้วยสิ

เฮ้อ...ไม่รู้จะทำไงดี จะเอาไปตากแดด ก็เย็นแล้ว (มืดแล้วด้วย) ก็เลยคิดว่า .. อืมม ตอนที่รู้ ก็ตอนที่เครื่องมันเริ่มร้อนหน่อยๆ มดมันเลยหนีออกมาจากหลังเครื่องตามรูพัดลมกับช่องระบายอากาศ ... ก็เลยหาอะไรที่มันหนักๆ เครื่องให้เครื่องมันทำเล่น ก็เลยให้มันคูณ matrix 1000x1000 เล่นไปเรื่อยๆ (แต่ว่าเราก็รันหลาย instant ของ program น่ะแหละ จะได้ร้อนๆ)

อยากจะเอางานตอนที่ทำตอน ป.ตรี ไปรันนะ นั่นน่ะตัวกินเครื่องเลย แต่ว่าแงะเครื่องแล้วกลับมา boot windows มีปัญหา คือ มัน boot windows ไปได้เกือบเสร็จแล้วก็ restart ใหม่เลย (แต่ว่าก็เข้า safe mode ได้นะ) ..เลยคิดว่าจะลงเครื่องใหม่ แต่ว่าก็ไม่มีแผ่น windows อยู่กับตัวอีก แถมเครื่องก็เพิ่งจะลงใหม่ๆ เลย ยังไม่ได้ลง linux ไว้ด้วย

เอาล่ะสิ ไม่มีเวลาลง linux ด้วย ก็เลยเอา gnustep 0.5 livecd (เก่า... แต่ว่ามันเป็น livecd ตัวเดียวที่มี และมี compiler ...) มา boot แล้วก็เขียนโปรแกรมง่ายๆ แต่ว่ากินแรงเครื่อง ให้มันทำบริหารพัดลมกับสร้างความร้อน.. มาไล่มด

I won't quote any of the article here.

While I find it quite amusing and if the author of the article isn't elitist Maczealot, then I'm quite sure he wrote it that way to amuse the reader and just-for-fun. It's a good read in a some free time when you want to have some smile/laughing after some hard thought/work.

Honestly speaking, from a PowerBook user's point of view (I own a 17" PB), I think a ThinkPad is quite a good machine with a serious look (but obviously not a sexy one). The machine, from my personal experience, is quite reliable and dependable. I don't know if ThinkPad (especially since it's no longer an IBM's product, but the Chinese company Lenovo's) bundle so many junkware/demoware/uselessware or not. I don't really care since I will just repartition the drive and reinstall everything (including installing Linux) anyway.

Also, as long as the new Intel-Mac cannot boot Windows, there are still needs for Windows-machine, and the need will just get stronger as Microsoft push the gear up to corporate desktop, workstation, and enterprise; places where Apple's hallmark iLife and iWork have no place in, and places where they don't need Apple's 'Creative Pro Apps' (there are places for those apps, which are great apps, but not in the places I'm talking about).

Well, if I do have to choose between a PowerBook and a ThinkPad, I'd obviously pick a PowerBook (except if I really have to work with .NET framework/Web Services). However, if I could have both; I'd glad to, too.

By the way, ThinkPad now have the Titanium-cover version. While I quite like the Titanium, I would prefer the entirely Titanium housing, not just the cover.

Also, the Mac in the Tiger-era (OS X 10.4.x) isn't as stable as most myths lead people to believe, too. (To be fair, Panther was rock-solid).

สงสัยต้องเพิ่ม section เกี่ยวกับ OS X ลงใน blog แฮะ -_-" รู้สึกว่าใช้ไปใช้มา มีเรื่อง bug ให้ต้อง work around เยอะเหลือเกิน วันนี้ก็เจออีกล่ะ คราวนี้ Font Book ....

เรื่องมันมีอยู่ว่า จะเปิด slide เก่าของตัวเองดูใน Keynote เพราะจะทำเป็น pdf แต่ว่ามันฟ้องว่าหา font ไม่เจอ ... อืมมม มันเป็นไรของมันเนี่ย วันก่อนก็ยังใช้อยู่เป็นปกติ หรือว่า theme นี้มันมีปัญหา (ลืมบอกไป ว่า theme ที่ใช้คือ Portfolio)? ก็เลยลองปิด Keynote แล้วเปิดใหม่ สร้าง presentation ใหม่เลย แต่ว่ามันก็ยังฟ้องอีก หรือว่า theme นี้มันมีปัญหาจริงๆ ไหนลองเปลี่ยน theme ดูซิ

เอาล่ะครับ theme ไหนๆ พวกก็เล่นฟ้องว่าหา font ไม่เจอหมดเลย อะไรเนี่ย เมื่อวานยังดีๆ อยู่แท้ๆ ไหงวันนี้เป็นงี้ล่ะ

ก็เลยเข้า Font Book ปรากฎว่า User font โดน disable (ขึ้นเป็น Off) อยู่ เฮ้ย เป็นไปได้ไง ไม่ได้ไปทำอะไรกับมันนี่ ลอง search หาวิธีแก้จาก net ก็หาไม่เจอ T_T ลองเข้าไปดูที่ ~/Library/Fonts ก็มี font อยู่นี่ มันเป็นอะไรของมันฟะ ลอง restart เครื่องก็ไม่หาย

แย่แล้ว.... ขนาดไม้ตายของคนคอมพ์ (มีปัญหากด restart) ยังเอาไม่อยู่

ก็เลยลองทำอะไรประหลาดๆ ดู... ย้าย font ออกจาก ~/Library/Fonts ให้หมด .. แล้วย้ายกลับลงไป แล้ว restart ใหม่ ...

เออ หายแฮะ คราวนี้ไม่มีปัญหาเลย หรือว่าอาการแปลกๆ ประหลาดๆ มันก็ต้องแก้แบบแปลกๆ ประหลาดๆ?

เฮ้อ... ยิ่งใช้ OS X นับวัน bug ยิ่งเยอะ แถมยิ่งแปลก.... เมื่อไหร่ update ที่แก้ bug ต๊องๆ พวกนี้มันจะออกมามั่งเนี่ย (10.4.3 ที่แก้ serious bugs เยอะแยะ อันนั้นดีนะ .. แต่ว่าไอ้เจ้า 10.4.4. "widget update" เนี่ยดิ... ออกมาทำไมก็ไม่รู้)

รู้มาจาก entry ใน blog พี่ Hui อีกที

เฮ้อ.. เซ็งแฮะ มันเรื่องอะไรกันนักหนาก็ไม่รู้ ต้องไปปิดกั้นคนไทยในต่างประเทศให้รับรู้เรื่องบางเรื่อง แง่บางแง่ มุมบางมุม ของบ้านเราเนี่ย หรือว่าความคิดและมุมมองของคนไทยในต่างแดนมันจะเป็นอันตรายต่อใครเหรอ?

ไม่รู้สิ เมื่อก่อนเราก็เป็นคนหนึ่งในนั้น และอีกไม่นานก็จะเป็นอีกแล้ว (ถ้ารีบไปเรียนต่อนะ)

แต่ว่าลองอ่านจาก comment ของ bact' ดู เห็นบอกว่าจากเยอรมันเข้าได้นี่... หรือว่ามันจะ block ญี่ปุ่นประเทศเดียวฟะ เอ.. หรือว่าพวกเรียนญี่ปุ่นนี่เป็นอันตรายเกินไป? (เราก็จบญี่ปุ่น)

OS X 10.4.4 review

หลังจากรอมานาน ตั้งแต่ OS X 10.4 Tiger ออกใหม่ๆ แล้ว ว่าเมื่อไหร่มันจะ update ให้ stable ได้แบบ Panther ซะที

ก็ร้องเพลงรอไปเรื่อย ตั้งแต่ 10.4.1 (ที่ออกมาหลังจาก 10.4 ออกหน่อยเดียว) มาถึง 10.4.3 ที่ค่อนข้างจะเสถียรนะ.. แต่ว่าก็ยังไม่ค่อยได้ใจเท่าไหร่ ซักพักก็มีข่าวของ 10.4.4 (แน่นอน update มันต้องมีมาเรื่อยๆ สิ) ก็หวังว่ามันจะมาทำโน่นนี่ให้ดีขึ้น

แต่ว่า .. ผิดหวังแฮะ เพราะว่า update นี้นี่ แทบไม่มี technical improvement หรือว่าแก้ปัญหาในส่วนโน้นส่วนนี้ที่ยังมีปัญหาอยู่เท่าไหร่ แล้วก็ไม่รู้ว่าจะยัดเยียด widgets ที่คิดไม่ออกหเมือนกันว่าใครจะใช้ มาให้ทำไมกันนักหนา

Dashboard มันก็เข้าท่าดีอ่ะนะ ใช้เป็นประจำ ก็คงพวกปฎิทินแล้วก็ dictionary ล่ะมั้ง นอกนั้นก็เฉยๆ ไม่ค่อยมีประโยชน์กับเราเท่าไหร่ (เพราะไม่ได้อยู่ US แล้วก็ส่วนมากมันก็ specialized กับ US content ซะเหลือเกิน) ... คราวนี้อะไรเนี่ย นอกจากจะ US จ๋า มากขึ้นแล้ว อยากจะรู้ว่าไปเปลี่ยนสี่ปฎิทินทำไม แล้วก็ google search widget นี่ใส่มาทำไมเหรอ...

อืมมม หลายคนเค้าเรียก 10.4.4 ว่า Widgets udpate เลยด้วยซ้ำไป อันนี้ก็แดกดันไปนิด

ก็พอเข้าใจล่ะนะ ว่าต้องเข็น 10.4.4 ออกมาทั้งสอง version ทั้ง PPC ทั้ง Intel (universal binary) .. ก็คงทำให้แก้ปัญหาโน่นนี่ยากขึ้นหน่อย เพราะว่าไม่แน่ใจว่าบางปัญหามันจะเป็น platform specific หรือเปล่า (น่าจะเป็นแบบนั้น) แต่ว่าถ้าเป็นปัญหาแบบ universal จริงๆ (คือเป็นปัญหาที่ตัว framework หรือ technology) ก็น่าจะแก้ได้ หรือว่าจะยิ่งแก้ยากขึ้นก็ไม่รู้

เฮ้อ สรุปว่า ผิดหวัง .. และคิดว่าไม่น่าไป update มันเลย(ว่ะ)

ว่าจะทำตั้งนานแล้ว แต่ว่าไม่ได้ทำซักกะที เมื่ออาทิตย์ก่อนก็ยุ่งชะมัดยาด เลยยิ่งต้องค้างกันไปอีก แต่ว่าอาทิตย์นี้น่าจะว่างขึ้นล่ะ คงจะได้ลุยซักที ... แต่ว่าคนที่วางตัวไว้ให้ช่วยทำก็ท่าทางจะยังไม่ว่างนะ (จริงๆ ทำเองหมดเลยก็ได้ แต่ว่าถ้าเป็นงั้นเดี๋ยวเราไป ก็ลำบากกัน..)

อืมม อาจจะต้องสอนชดเชย numerical methods กับ computer simulation ด้วยนะเนี่ย แต่ว่าไม่เป็นไรหรอก ก็ลากมาสอนบน lab จะได้หางานให้ทำด้วย :-) อืมมม ง่ายดี

อ่อ post นี้ไม่มีอะไรมากหรอก แค่มาบ่นๆ ไปงั้นแหละ อีกอย่าง อยากจะทดสอบภาษาไทยด้วย

I'm back at last!

It seems like I have not engaged in any online activity for a long time. It's true, I admit that. However, it was because I was so busy with all other things. Also, I was a bit frustrated with Exteen's blogging system. Well, I heard the harddrive crashed and, boom, gone some of my good recent posts. (I'm not sure whether their harddrive really crashed or not, but some of my posts really disappeared).

Well, fine, I will run my own blog.

Where? Blogspot is out of question, my faculty (or campus, or university) has problem with it due to the caching system. So, it seems I have to really run my own. Well, but I'm not in a mood to implement my own blogging engine even though it should be relatively easy with things like Ruby on Rails, I don't have to time to have that fun :-(

I tried Apple's new iWeb, and it's not really what I want. It's too simple and lacks lots of features I like to have to make my web (for Joe users, it's a really nice app, though). So, thanks to the RapidWeaver, now I'm back.
